finally caught a good 10m opening yesterday — what's going on with solar flux lately?

so i've been kind of half paying attention to space weather stuff for a while now but yesterday something clicked and i actually worked 14 countries on 10 meters in like two hours which honestly blew my mind because the band has been pretty dead every time i checked it the last few months. had a few european stations coming in so loud it sounded like they were next door and even caught what i think was a JA station calling CQ around noon local time.

anyway i went and looked at the solar flux index after and it was sitting around 178 which apparently is pretty high? i dont really have a great feel for what the numbers mean in terms of actual band conditions. like i know higher flux generally means better HF but is there a rough rule of thumb for when 10m actually starts getting useful vs just being noise? and does the SFI have to stay elevated for a few days before the bands really open up or can it happen pretty fast

also noticed the K index was pretty low which i assume helped. still learning all this stuff so any pointers appreciated

yeah 178 is solidly good, you're getting into territory where 10m really comes alive especially for trans-atlantic and trans-pacific paths. generally speaking once SFI climbs above maybe 150 or so you start seeing real DX on 10 and 12 meters, below that it gets spottier. the low K index absolutely helped too — even with great solar flux a geomagnetic storm can kill the higher bands pretty fast, so having both going your way at the same time is kind of the sweet spot.

the flux doesn't need to build up over days necessarily, though sustained elevated flux does tend to condition the ionosphere better over time. but honestly a single good day can produce amazing openings if the geometry lines up. sounds like you hit it perfectly. worth setting up a notification from one of the propagation sites so you can catch the next one before it's half over

oh man 14 countries in two hours on 10m I'd be losing my mind. i'm still pretty new and have only worked a handful of DX contacts total. quick question if you dont mind — were you running any real power or just barefoot? im wondering if 10m openings like that are workable with 100w and a simple antenna or if i need an amp to actually get through
