RMS Packet Gateway Setup - VARA FM Audio Issues

Working on setting up my first RMS Packet gateway for the local ARES group using a Yaesu FT-2980R on 2 meters. RMS Packet is simple to install and run, and requires a minimum of computer and radio equipment, with VARA FM and Soundmodem programs running minimized in the background. However, I'm running into consistent audio level issues - VARA FM shows red levels frequently and connections fail. Radio specs: FT-2980R set to 25W, deviation at factory settings. Interface: Digirig with recommended cable. Has anyone dealt with similar overdriven audio problems? I've tried reducing both TX and RX audio levels but still getting the red indicators.

Classic Digirig audio issue - you need to set your radio's deviation to about 2.5kHz max for VARA FM. Also check that you're not using VOX mode, use PTT control instead. The red audio levels usually indicate you're overdriving the input.

Had the exact same problem with my FT-2980R setup last month. Solution was dropping the radio's mic gain to about 30% and setting VARA FM TX level to around 40%. Common troubleshooting shows overdriven audio requires lowering TX/RX audio levels. Test with a local user before going live.

To set up a Winlink Gateway, first you need authorization from the Winlink Network Administrator, then download RMS Packet from Winlink's Sysop Programs page. But for your audio issue - try enabling the Digirig's internal sound card levels in Windows and use those controls instead of relying on radio settings alone.
