so ive been trying to get winlink working for a couple weeks now and i keep hitting walls. my basic setup is a IC-7300 feeding into a signalink USB for the audio interface, running vara HF on the PC. i can see the waterfall moving when i key up and the audio levels look reasonable in vara, but i cant seem to actually complete a session with any of the RMS gateways i try.

what happens is vara shows it connecting, sometimes it even shows a partial handshake i think, but then it just drops and winlink express gives me a timed out error. ive tried like 6 different gateway frequencies from the RMS list and same thing every time. the signal gets out, my buddy a few miles away can hear me on the frequency so its not a TX issue. wondering if its something with my vara registration or maybe the RMS stations themselves are just picky about signal quality. anybody been through this and figured it out?

yeah this sounds familiar, i went through almost the exact same thing when i first set up vara HF. a couple things to check -- first, are you running the free version of vara or did you pay for the full license? the free version is heavily throttled and some gateways will basically refuse to complete a session with it because the speeds are too slow and the handshake times out. worth the $69 or whatever it is to just get the full version if you havent already.

second thing, and this got me for a while, is the split audio routing. winlink express needs to have the right soundcard selected AND vara has its own audio settings too, they can conflict if youre not careful. make sure vara is pointing to the signalink and not your system default audio. also check that PTT is configured correctly in vara -- if youre keying via CAT or VOX versus the signalink PTT line it makes a difference in timing. theres a vara tuning guide floating around on the winlink.org site that walks through the whole audio level calibration thing, that helped me a lot actually.

one thing nobody mentions is that a lot of the RMS gateways you see in the list are just not that active or have crappy upstream internet connections. i've had way better luck sorting the list by distance and then checking the last heard timestamp -- if a gateway hasnt been heard in like 6 hours during normal operating times thats a red flag. also some gateways run on specific schedules or their sysops just dont maintain them well.

also worth trying telnet mode first just to confirm your winlink account is actually set up and messages route correctly before you blame the RF side. if telnet works fine then you know the account and software config is good and its purely an RF/vara problem. took me a while to think of that but it narrowed things down fast.
