so i've been on 10 meters pretty much every evening this week and the band has just been insane. worked a bunch of stations in europe tuesday afternoon and then last night i stumbled into a pileup for a VP8 station and actually got through on like my third call which never happens to me. im running maybe 100 watts and a dipole thats not even at a great height so im not exactly a powerhouse station here.

checked the solar flux index and it was sitting around 180 which i guess explains some of it but honestly i dont fully understand how to read those numbers. like i know higher is generally better but is there a threshold where you start seeing these kind of long haul openings on 10? and does the K index matter as much as the flux number or is it kind of secondary? been hamming for about 3 years now and propagation is still kind of a black box to me even though i find it fascinating

yeah 10 has been really good lately, flux in the upper 170s to low 180s is prime territory for that kind of thing. the general rule of thumb i use is once you're consistently above 150 or so you start seeing reliable F2 propagation on 10, and above 170 it can really open up worldwide. below 120 and 10 is usually pretty dead except for sporadic-E which is a whole different animal.

the K index is more about geomagnetic stability — you want it low, ideally 2 or below. a high K index basically means the ionosphere is getting disturbed from solar wind activity and that messes with the higher bands especially. so you can have great flux but if K is sitting at 4 or 5 after a CME hit the earth things can still go sideways fast. the two numbers together tell you a lot more than either one alone. there are some good propagation prediction sites out there, DXmaps and the VE3SUN solar data page are ones i check pretty regularly.

VP8 on 100w and a dipole is solid, nice work. i had a similar thing happen back during the last solar cycle peak, worked ZL on 10 with a vertical and barefoot rig and couldnt believe it. there's something about chasing DX on 10 when the band is hot that's just addictive, way more fun than grinding out contacts on 40 in my opinion haha. anyway yeah flux has been trending up for a while now and were getting pretty deep into cycle 25 which has honestly exceeded most of the early predictions so hopefully this keeps up for another year or two at least
