so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, went out to a state forest area that has a reference number and set up a simple wire dipole strung between two trees. overall it went pretty well, got way more contacts than i expected honestly, people really do hunt these references.

but i have a few things im still confused about. when i self-spotted on pota.app i noticed some hunters were also logging it as a WWFF contact, is that normal? like do the two programs just kind of overlap for a lot of parks and forests? and also how strict are the rules about being actually within the boundaries? i was parked at a trailhead that was technically just outside the main reference area but i could basically see the boundary. felt a little sketchy so i packed up and hiked in about 10 minutes before starting, just wanted to make sure i did it right.

also whats the deal with uploading logs, do i go through wwff.cc or is there another way now? i saw something about a different portal but couldnt find clear info. the whole logging side of this is honestly more confusing than the actual operating part lol

yeah the POTA and WWFF overlap is totally normal, a lot of references cover the same physical areas especially with national forests and wildlife refuges. hunters can count the same QSO for both programs if you're activated under both. some activators actually self-spot on both systems at the same time which is fine, just means you get more callers which is never a bad thing.

good call on hiking inside the boundary. the rules do say you need to be within the reference area, and while most people probably wouldnt know either way, its just cleaner to do it right especially for your first one. i had a similar situation at a wetland refuge where the parking was outside and i almost just operated from the car before reading the rules more carefully.

for log uploads wwff.cc is still the main place, you create an account and submit there. i usually export from my logging software as an ADIF and just upload that. takes maybe 5 minutes once you figure it out the first time. congrats on the activation btw, first one is always the most nerve wracking

the boundary thing is something i stressed about on my first one too. i think as long as you made a good faith effort to be inside you're fine, the program isnt really running spot checks lol. but yeah being actually inside is obviously the right call.

one thing nobody told me before my first activation - make sure you note the exact WWFF reference number in your log for each contact, not just the park name. i had to manually edit a bunch of entries because my software wasnt capturing it right and the upload got rejected. small thing but kind of annoying to fix after the fact
