so ive been licensed since spring and just got my HF privileges sorted out, running a modest setup — IC-7300 into a wire dipole up about 30 feet, nothing fancy. everybody keeps telling me i need to do contests but honestly i dont even know where to start. like there's CQ WW coming up and everyone in the club acts like its the superbowl of ham radio which maybe it is? but i tried to read the rules and got kind of overwhelmed. then theres ARRL Field Day which i guess already happened this year but i missed it completely because i didnt really know what it was until after. someone also mentioned SOTA but i cant tell if thats a contest or just a thing people do on mountaintops.

anyway my actual question is just like, for someone totally new to operating, whats a reasonable way to dip a toe in without embarrassing myself on the air or screwing up someone's run frequency. i listen to the 20m pileups during these events and it sounds like pure chaos to me still. is there like a beginner friendly contest or should i just jump into one of the big ones and see what happens

Oh man Field Day is absolutely the one to start with but yeah you missed it for this year. Mark June on your calendar and find a club that does a group activation — honestly that's the whole point of it, its a social thing as much as a contest and there's almost always someone to show you the ropes. You won't be alone making calls.

For right now though, SOTA isn't really a contest at all, its more of an awards program where people activate summits and you call them from wherever you are (or you go up yourself). Very low pressure and the community is super friendly. The chasers on the other end are usually patient because they know activators are often struggling with portable gear on a windy hilltop or whatever.

CQ WW is genuinely intense but theres nothing stopping you from just jumping on and working a few stations in the bottom of the hour when things slow down a bit. Mess up a callsign and move on, everyone does it. The only rule that actually matters is dont park on someone's run frequency and start calling CQ yourself. Just search and pounce for your first few times, way less stressful.

yeah SOTA is totally its own thing, i got into it this summer and its kind of addicting in a different way than contesting. you basically earn points for activating summits and there are chasers logging contacts with you from home. the exchanges are short, people are patient, and the biggest stress is honestly just whether your battery holds out and if you can find a tree to throw an end fed over.

for actual contests i'd say try the ARRL Sweepstakes when it comes around, its a bit slower paced than CQ WW in my experience and working all the sections in the US and Canada feels more achievable than trying to work all the zones in the world on your first go. just my two cents anyway
