so ive been trying to get Winlink working for maybe three weeks now and i keep hitting walls. i got Winlink Express installed and i can see RMS gateways in the map but im not totally clear on how the whole chain works. like is the RMS gateway just a repeater basically, it receives my packet signal and then forwards it to the internet to reach the CMS server? or is there more to it than that.

my current setup is a Kenwood TM-V71A into a Signalink USB, running on 2 meters. ive gotten a few connects but then the session just drops before the message actually goes through. not sure if its my audio levels or if im just too far from the gateway. i did check and theres an RMS node about 22 miles away line of sight should be fine. the other thing thats confusing me is message handling, like once i send an email through Winlink does the recipient just see a regular email or does it look weird on their end. asking because i want to use this for backup comms with my family and theyre not hams obviously.

yeah you basically have the concept right. the RMS gateway is running software (usually RMS Packet or RMS Relay depending on the mode) and it does act as that bridge between your RF session and the Winlink CMS servers on the internet. so your radio connects to the gateway via packet, the gateway is connected to the CMS via the internet, and the CMS is what actually stores and routes the messages. if the gateway loses internet during your session thats probably why you're dropping.

for the audio levels with the Signalink, thats almost always the culprit when sessions are flaky. the TX knob on the Signalink should be pretty conservative, i usually set mine so the radio's ALC is barely moving, maybe just a flicker. people crank it and then the audio is overdriven and the modem on the other end just cant decode it cleanly. also make sure you're in Packet Winlink mode in Winlink Express and using 1200 baud on VHF, not VARA FM unless the gateway specifically supports it, you have to check the gateway listing.

and yes to your last question, the recipient just gets a normal looking email. it comes from your callsign at winlink.org, so like [email protected] or whatever, and it shows up as totally regular email on their end. might land in spam the first time depending on their provider but thats about it.

i went through basically the same thing last year. one thing that tripped me up for way too long was that i had PTT set up wrong in the Signalink, the jumper inside the unit has to match your radio or it just never actually keys the transmitter. i was getting audio out but the radio wasnt keying and i sat there wondering why nothing was connecting for like two evenings. worth double checking if you havent already.

also 22 miles on 2m should be totally fine if youre both at decent elevation, but try a couple different gateways if you can. some of the RMS nodes listed are not super active or have flaky internet connections and the map doesnt always reflect that in real time.
