so ive been going back and forth on this for a few weeks now and figured id just ask here. im trying to put up something decent for 40m, mostly for ragchewing and some casual DX when conditions are good. my lot is about 75 feet wide and maybe 120 deep, so not terrible but not huge either.

i had a half wave dipole up for a while, fed with 450 ohm ladder line into a balanced tuner, and honestly it worked pretty well but i took it down when i rerouted some stuff in the shack and never put it back up. now im second guessing whether to just redo the dipole or throw up a vertical instead. i keep reading that verticals are better for DX because of the lower takeoff angle but then i also read that they pick up all kinds of noise and you need a good ground system or its all a wash.

my ground situation isnt great — i'm in a suburban lot and i cant really run 60 radials without my wife losing her mind. was thinking maybe 8 to 16 radials elevated slightly and just live with whatever i get. or do i just put the dipole back up, maybe try to get the center around 45 feet and call it done. anybody dealt with this kind of tradeoff on 40 specifically?

honestly for 40m a dipole at 45 feet is going to be pretty competitive with a vertical for most stuff you want to do. the takeoff angle at that height is somewhere around 40-45 degrees which isnt ideal for long path DX but for anything in the 500 to 2000 mile range its actually pretty solid, which is where most of the ragchewing happens anyway.

the other thing nobody really talks about is noise. verticals in suburban areas can be rough depending on your neighbors. mine was picking up so much hash from switching power supplies and LED lighting that it was basically unusable on 40 and 80 unless I was running the preamp off. went back to the dipole and the noise floor dropped by probably 10 dB easy. that might not be everyone's experience but its worth thinking about if your neighborhood has a lot of that stuff going on.

if you already have the wire and the tuner, id just put the dipole back up. you can always experiment with a vertical later but get something in the air first.

I went through the exact same thing last year. ended up doing a fan dipole with elements for both 40 and 80 off the same feedpoint, works great and no real compromise on either band. just something to consider if you ever want to get on 80 too without running separate antennas.

the elevated radial thing for verticals does work but you really want at least 4 and they should be resonant, not just random lengths. i had a buddipole style vertical for a while with like 2 drooping radials and it was pretty mediocre honestly. the dipole I have now is just better in every way for my situation.
