first attempt at a homebrew dipole, some questions before i cut anything

ok so ive been on HF for about 8 months now with a vertical i bought and honestly im getting tired of the noise floor on it, neighbors have solar inverters and whatever else going on and the vertical just picks up all of it. a buddy at the club keeps telling me to just build a dipole and get it in the trees and itll be way quieter so i finally decided to try it.

i have about 140 feet of 14 gauge stranded copper wire i pulled off a spool at the hardware store, and a 1:1 balun i bought online a while back that i never used. my plan was to cut it for 40m since thats where i spend most of my time. i know the formula, 468 divided by freq in mhz, so around 33.3 feet per leg at 7.1 or so mhz.

my question is more about the center insulator and the end insulators — do i actually need to buy those or can i just use something i make from a chunk of PVC or even just some rope tied in a certain way. also how much does it actually matter if the antenna isnt perfectly horizontal, like one end might be maybe 10 feet lower than the other because of where my trees are. does that kill the antenna or is it fine.

also should i solder the wire to the balun or just clamp it, i wasnt sure.

the inverted V or sloped configuration is totally fine, people do it all the time and it works great. the pattern shifts a bit but honestly on 40m youre not going to notice or care. as long as the center is up as high as you can get it the ends dont need to be perfectly level, just keep them off the ground by a few feet at minimum or youll have losses and RF where you dont want it.

for insulators i use the egg type ceramic ones on the ends but ive also just drilled holes in small chunks of CPVC and threaded the wire through and it worked fine for years. PVC is perfectly good at RF at HF frequencies, the losses are negligible. the center insulator matters a bit more just because thats where the stress is, so make sure whatever you use is solid mechanically. i actually bought a piece of 3/4 inch schedule 40 PVC, cut it about 4 inches, drilled two holes close together in the middle for the coax and balun attachment, and two holes near each end for the wire, worked fine.

solder the connections, dont just clamp them. a bad mechanical connection will corrode and youll be chasing an intermittent problem six months from now wondering why your SWR jumped. tin the wire ends, tin the balun terminals if they have them, and make a good solid joint then seal it up with self amalgamating tape. the 14 gauge stranded is fine for a backyard dipole, maybe a little light if you get a lot of ice load but for most situations its ok.

yeah dont overthink the insulators, i made some out of sections of fiberglass tent pole once and they lasted three years. the dipole itself is pretty forgiving. one thing i will say though is cut it a little long first, like maybe half a foot extra per side, then trim it down after you measure SWR. much easier to trim than to add back on. the 468 formula gets you in the ballpark but your actual environment, height, nearby trees, soil conductivity, all that stuff shifts it a bit so plan on doing a trim and check cycle.
