okay so ive been trying to get Winlink working for maybe three weeks now and i think im close but something isnt clicking for me with the whole gateway thing. i get the basic concept - you send email over radio through an RMS gateway and it goes out to the internet - but when im actually sitting at the computer with Winlink Express open and trying to connect it just times out or says no stations available.

my setup is a ic-7300 going into a signalink usb, running vara hf in the background. i can see my audio levels are fine and vara seems happy, but when i do a channel selector scan it finds stations and then when i actually try to connect to one it just sits there. i also dont really understand if im supposed to be picking gateways manually or if the software does it or what. the documentation is there but its written like you already know what youre doing half the time.

also totally separate question - once messages are actually sent, how does the handling work on the receiving end? like if i send to a normal gmail address does it just show up or is there some weird formatting thing that happens. ive read conflicting stuff on this.

the timeout thing is almost always either propagation or your audio path - vara is pretty unforgiving about timing. one thing that caught me early on was the TX delay setting in the signalink, i had it cranked up too high and it was stepping on the handshake. try backing off the TX delay trimmer and see if that helps. also vara hf free vs the paid version makes a real difference in which gateways will even respond to you, a lot of the busy RMS stations have moved to only accepting vara FM or paid vara HF connections.

on the gateway selection - winlink express does it automatically when you hit connect but you can also go into the channel selector and sort by distance and signal reports and pick one manually. i usually pick something within maybe 500 miles and not one of the super busy ones on the east coast because those get hammered all day. middle of the night is way easier to get a clean connection.

for the gmail question - yeah it just shows up as a regular email, from an @winlink.org address. formatting is pretty plain but it works fine. attachments have a size limit though, something like 120kb by default which catches people off guard.

went through the exact same thing a few months ago lol. for me the problem turned out to be my waterfall looked fine but i had a ground loop somewhere causing just enough noise to mess up the vara decoding. wasnt obvious at all. tried a different USB port and it got way better which makes no sense but here we are.

also just want to second what was said about the attachment limit - i tried to send a PDF once during an emcomm exercise and it just got rejected silently which was annoying to figure out. you can bump the limit up in the settings but gateways also have their own limits so even if you change it on your end the gateway might still drop it.
