ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now, general class, and ive been having a blast just making contacts but someone at my local club meeting mentioned I should start logging carefully because of awards and honestly I had no idea what they were talking about. I came home and started reading and now im more confused than before lol

so from what I can tell DXCC is about working 100 countries, WAS is all 50 states, and WAZ is like zones? but are these totally separate programs or do the contacts kind of overlap and count toward multiple things? like if I work a station in California does that count toward WAS and also potentially toward DXCC if its a different entity somehow? I dont think California is a separate entity but you get what im asking

also do I need to do anything special while im making contacts to make sure they count, or does it just depend on logging them correctly in something like LOTW? my elmer told me to get on LOTW but I havent set it up yet which I know I should do. any advice on where to even start with this whole awards thing would be great, its a bit overwhelming

yeah these are all separate award programs but your contacts absolutely can and do count toward multiple awards at the same time, thats the beauty of it. work W6 in California and boom that counts toward WAS, and if you worked enough US stations it could contribute to your total confirmed entities for DXCC too (though the lower 48 only count as one entity). WAZ is the zones thing - there's 40 CQ zones in the world and you need to confirm all 40 for the basic award.

the key thing is LOTW - seriously get that set up before anything else. its a bit of a pain to configure the first time but once its running its almost automatic. a lot of your contacts wont even need a paper QSL card if the other station is on LOTW too and you both upload your logs. some DX stations especially ones doing expeditions to rare places are really good about uploading to LOTW quickly.

dont stress too much about working specific things right now, just work everything you can and log it all cleanly with the right date time frequency and mode. the awards stuff will start to make sense as you accumulate contacts. I didnt really get into serious award chasing until I'd been licensed a couple years and then looked back at my log and realized I was already most of the way to WAS without even trying

one thing worth mentioning - WAZ can be trickier than people expect because some zones are genuinely hard to find activity in, like zone 2 up in the arctic regions. I chased WAZ for probably three years before I finally confirmed all 40. DXCC on the other hand you can get to the basic 100 pretty quick if you put in time on 20m during decent conditions, theres usually something to work.

also just so you know eQSL is another electronic system some people use but LOTW is really the one that matters for ARRL awards like DXCC and WAS. some smaller national awards accept eQSL though so its not totally useless, I run both.
