using DXwatch and QRZ cluster spots together - am i doing this right?

so ive been trying to get more into DX chasing lately and someone at the club mentioned using cluster spots to find stations before they disappear. i set up an account on QRZ and i can see the logbook stuff fine but the cluster spotting part is confusing me a bit. like i see spots coming in on DXwatch but im not totally sure how to cross reference them with what QRZ is showing or if thats even the thing to do.

also is there a way to filter by band on DXwatch? i mostly operate 20m and 40m and right now it just seems like a firehose of spots from bands i cant even use with my current antenna situation. been using the HRD logbook software if that matters, not sure if it integrates with any of this or if i should just be running a separate browser tab.

sorry if this is a dumb question, only been licensed about 8 months and this whole DX thing is a rabbit hole i wasnt expecting

not a dumb question at all, cluster spotting tripped me up for a while too when i first got into DX. DXwatch does let you filter by band - theres a filter option near the top of the page, might look slightly different depending on whether youre on the classic view or the newer layout. you can set it to only show 20m and 40m spots and it makes things way more manageable.

as for QRZ vs DXwatch, i kind of think of them as doing slightly different things. QRZ spotting is fine but a lot of serious DXers i know use DX Summit or even telnet into a cluster directly from their logging software. HRD actually does have cluster integration built in - go into the DX Cluster tab and you can point it at a telnet cluster server and it'll feed spots right into the log. once you set that up you wont want to go back to doing it manually in a browser, it changes everything honestly. dx.qsl.net is a good cluster to start with if you want a telnet address to try.

yeah what he said about HRD is right, i remember figuring that out and it was kind of a game changer. one thing i'll add - when youre first starting out with cluster spots just be aware that not every spot is accurate or current. sometimes a spot is like 20 minutes old by the time you see it and the station is long gone, especially on 15m or 10m when conditions are moving fast. so when you see something interesting on 20m just jump on it and see if you can actually hear anything rather than spending too much time trying to verify it first. youll develop a feel for which spots tend to be reliable over time.
