so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and i keep hearing everyone talk about CQ WW and ARRL Field Day and SOTA and all these events and honestly i dont really understand the difference between them or how serious i need to be to participate. like is it weird to just jump in as a complete newbie? i dont want to slow people down or mess up someone elses run if theyre trying to rack up contacts.

i have a basic HF setup, nothing fancy, just an IC-7300 with a dipole up about 25 feet. my buddy at the local club said CQ WW is coming up and i should just try it but he didnt really explain what i should actually DO when i get on. do i just tune around and call stations back when i hear them? or do i need to be running a frequency myself. and whats the exchange - i keep seeing people talk about exchanging serial numbers and zones and im confused about which contest uses which.

also SOTA looks super interesting to me since i like hiking but that seems like a whole other thing entirely. anyway any advice would be really appreciated, especially from anyone who remembers their first contest experience

oh man i remember my first CQ WW, i just sat there for like 20 minutes listening because i was so nervous to transmit lol. honestly the best thing you can do starting out is search and pounce - just tune around, find a station calling CQ contest, wait for a gap and throw your callsign out. most contest ops are really patient with newer stations even if they sound a little rushed.

for CQ WW the exchange is your signal report and your CQ zone, so for most of us in the US its 59 05 or whatever your zone is. you can look up your zone on the ARRL website. Field Day is a totally different animal - thats more of a club/emergency preparedness thing and the exchange is your category and ARRL section. way more relaxed vibe, usually people set up in parks or fields and its almost like a picnic that happens to involve radio.

SOTA yeah thats its own world but a really fun one. the activators go up summits and try to make contacts, and you can chase them from home which is super easy and satisfying. dont worry about activating yourself until youre more comfortable but chasing is great even with your setup. N1MM Logger is what most people use for contesting, worth downloading before the weekend and just playing with it a bit so youre not fumbling during the actual event.

dont stress too much about slowing people down, experienced contesters have heard it all and an extra second or two for a new call isnt going to ruin anyones score. just speak clearly and confidently even if youre not feeling it inside, half of contesting is just committing to the transmission.

your IC-7300 and dipole will work fine for making contacts, you wont be leading the scoreboard but thats not the point your first time out. just aim to make like 20 or 30 contacts and see how it feels. thats honestly more valuable than any advice anyone can give you here.
