confused about vanity callsigns vs just waiting for sequential

ok so i just passed my technician exam last week and im waiting on my callsign to show up in the ULS database. someone at the club mentioned i could apply for a vanity call instead of just taking whatever sequential one the FCC assigns me. i had no idea this was even a thing

so my question is basically - do i just wait and get whatever they give me, or should i go ahead and apply for a vanity? and if i do apply for vanity do i lose my spot in the sequential line or does it just run in parallel? i dont really understand how the timing works. the FCC website is honestly kind of confusing to navigate especially when youre brand new to all this

also does it cost anything? i saw something about a $35 fee but wasnt sure if thats per application or what. any help appreciated, dont want to mess up my first license

congrats on passing the test. so the way it works is you actually get your sequential callsign first before you can apply for a vanity - the FCC needs you to have an active license grant before you can submit a vanity application. so just wait for your sequential call to show up in the ULS, it usually takes a few days to a week or so. once you have that you're good to go and can apply for whatever vanity call you want as long as it's available and you're eligible for that call district format.

the $35 fee is per application yeah, and that applies to vanity calls. sequential assignments are automatic so no fee there. one thing people dont always realize is that vanity applications go through a 18-day filing window and if multiple people apply for the same call it goes to a tiebreaker process, so popular short calls or ones with sentimental value can be competitive. if you just want something easy to remember and not too much hassle, some folks just keep their sequential and it works out fine

yeah i went through this same thing like 8 months ago when i got my tech. i ended up just keeping my sequential call for a while before i finally applied for a vanity last spring. honestly the ae7 calls in my area were pretty easy to get because theres a lot of them available, your mileage may vary depending on what district youre in and what format youre going for

theres a site called ae7q.com that a lot of people use to search available calls and see when licenses are expiring and stuff like that, way easier than trying to figure it out through the FCC ULS directly. helped me a lot when i was trying to pick something
