flux index been wild lately - missing DX openings or is it just me

so ive been watching the solar flux numbers for the past few weeks and they've been jumping all over the place, like one day its up around 180 and i'm hearing europe no problem on 17m, then two days later it crashes back down to 140 and everything sounds dead. i know thats kind of how the solar cycle works but i feel like i keep missing the good windows because i'm not home or i'm busy with work stuff.

been trying to use that DXmaps site and also the cluster to get a heads up but by the time i actually get to the radio the opening is already over or closing down. does anyone have a good way to actually catch these things in real time, like is there an alert or something that pings you when 10m or 12m opens up to a specific region? i really want to work more pacific stuff but the openings to that direction from the midwest seem so short when they do happen

also wondering if anyone else noticed 20m has been kind of weird, like sometimes there's massive pileups on some DX station but the signal is all fluttery and hard to copy. polar path stuff maybe? anyway curious what others are seeing out there

yeah the flux has been all over the place, welcome to the rising part of the cycle haha. honestly the best thing i found for catching openings is just setting up DX Sherlock or even just having the DX cluster running in the background on a second monitor. there are apps now that can send you a push notification when a specific band gets spotted to your region, i think DX Toolkit on android does something like that, but i havent messed with it much myself.

the fluttery 20m thing is almost certainly polar path propagation, especially if youre hearing european stations with that kind of doppler-y warbling sound. the path goes over the pole and during disturbed geomagnetic conditions it gets real ugly. check the K index when that happens, if its above 4 or so thats probably whats going on. sometimes a path that looks shorter on the map is actually going the long way around and that causes weird issues too.

for pacific from the midwest your window is usually pretty narrow, like early morning local time when the greyline is doing its thing. i'd set an alarm honestly, some of my best JA contacts happened before 7am my time

im kind of in the same boat as you, fairly new to HF and trying to figure out when to even bother turning the radio on. someone at my club mentioned the WWV broadcasts at 18 minutes past the hour have geomagnetic field info and solar flux which i thought was cool, old school way to check conditions without the internet. havent actually tried it yet but apparently you can hear it on 10 or 15 MHz if propagation allows which is kind of ironic
