first POTA activation didn't go exactly as planned but still had fun

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from my house, been wanting to try this for months and just never got around to it. setup was pretty simple, just my FT-891 and a random wire antenna thrown up in a tree, maybe 25 feet of coax. got there early which turned out to be a good idea because finding a spot with both decent shade AND a clear view in multiple directions took longer than i expected.

anyway i logged on to pota.app and spotted myself and within maybe 3 minutes i had a small pileup going which honestly surprised me, i wasnt expecting people to come back that fast. ended up with 22 QSOs on 40m before the band shifted and i lost most of europe. tried 20m but the noise floor at that park was pretty rough, not sure if it was power lines nearby or what. still got to 10 contacts on 20m so i hit the 10 QSO minimum for a valid activation which felt great.

one thing i totally wasnt prepared for was how much harder it is to log on paper while also operating, like keeping your place in a paper log while someone is calling you and you're trying to give your exchange is genuinely tricky. i know some people use apps on their phone but i wanted to do paper first just to really understand the flow. gonna try again next month, already eyeing a park in the next county that ive never activated before. anyone have tips for solo activations in terms of keeping things organized?

congrats on the first one, that feeling when the pile up starts is pretty addictive honestly. for logging on paper what helped me a lot was just pre-printing a simple grid sheet with columns already labeled so you're not having to think about where to write each piece of info, your brain is already doing enough during a pile up. some guys swear by voice recorders too, just narrate each QSO and transcribe later, works surprisingly well if you dont mind the extra step at home.

also that noise floor issue on 20m sounds like it could definitely be power lines, some parks are just terrible for that. i had a similar problem at one of my early activations and ended up just packing up and driving maybe half a mile down the road to a picnic area further from the road and the difference was huge. sometimes just moving 500 feet makes all the difference with local noise sources.

nice work getting the activation validated on your first try, some people struggle to hit 10 even with everything going right. im still working up the nerve to do mine, been hunting for about two months now and it looks like so much fun but also kind of stressful when youre running a frequency solo. did you announce your frequency on the spotting network before you started calling CQ or did you just spot yourself and start?
