confused about how callsign assignment works after passing the test

ok so i passed my technician exam last saturday and the VE team said my info would get submitted to the FCC and then i'd just wait. which is fine. but i've been reading around and now im more confused than when i started lol

someone in another thread mentioned something about sequential callsigns and vanity calls like they were two totally different things, and i guess i always assumed you just got whatever callsign the FCC handed you and that was that. is there actually a process where you can pick something specific? how does that even work, do you have to wait a certain amount of time before you can apply or can you do it right away once your license shows up in the database

also does it cost anything? i saw something about a fee now for FCC applications and i wasnt sure if that applied to vanity calls too or just the initial license. sorry if this is a dumb question, theres just a lot of conflicting info out there

not a dumb question at all, this stuff genuinely trips people up. so basically yeah there are two separate things happening. when you pass your exam, the FCC assigns you a sequential callsign automatically - it just comes out of a pool based on your district and license class, no input from you. for a new tech you'd get something in the format that reflects your region, like a 1x3 or 2x3 depending on availability.

the vanity call system is totally separate and lets you request a specific callsign, as long as it's available and you're eligible for that format based on your license class. you can actually apply for a vanity call as soon as your license shows up in the ULS database, you dont have to wait any extra time beyond that. the FCC fee situation - yeah that changed a few years ago, there's a $35 fee now for most transactions including vanity applications. some people say it's worth it for a short memorable call, others are happy with whatever they got sequentially. honestly either way works fine on the air, nobody's judging you for a longer callsign

went through this exact thing about a year ago. i just took whatever sequential call i got first and used it for maybe six months before i decided i wanted something shorter for cw. ended up applying for a 1x2 vanity once i upgraded to general and it went through in like a week or so. the wait isnt bad at all. only thing i'd add is there's a 18 month hold on calls from recently deceased hams before they go back into the vanity pool, so some calls you search for might show as unavailable but could open up later if you're patient about it
