first POTA activation didn't go quite as planned but still made it work

so i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from me (K-4829 for anyone curious) and it was way more of an adventure than i expected. I'd been hunting other peoples activations for a few months and figured i had a pretty good handle on how it all worked but actually being on the other side of the pile is a totally different thing.

setup was my KX2 with the built in tuner and a 40ft end fed wire i just kind of threw up into a tree with a throw bag. took me like 20 minutes to get the wire into a decent position and by then i already felt behind. spotted myself on the POTA app and the first few calls came in fine, i could work them no problem on 40m. but then around maybe contact 15 or so the pile just kind of died and i panicked a little and jumped to 20m and had to retune everything and lost another few minutes.

ended up with 22 contacts which i know qualifies but i was really hoping to do better. mostly just wondering if anyone has tips for keeping a pileup going or knowing when to actually switch bands vs just waiting it out. also is there any trick to the spotting because i feel like i spotted myself and then kind of forgot about it

22 contacts is a solid first activation, dont stress about the number too much. the qualifying threshold is 10 so you had a good cushion. the band switching thing is something everyone figures out differently -- i personally give a dead frequency about 3-4 minutes before i move, and when i do move i always re-spot right away with the new frequency in the comments field. a lot of hunters are watching the spots list and if you dont update they have no idea where you went.

the other thing that helped me a ton early on was keeping a more aggressive CQ rhythm. like dont leave huge pauses between calls or people assume youre done. just keep hammering it, something like CQ POTA CQ POTA DE [callsign] and barely pause. sounds almost rude but it actually keeps the frequency alive. also 20m mid afternoon can be really hit or miss depending on propagation, sometimes 40m is just better even if it feels slow. you'll get a feel for it after a few more trips out

yeah i had a similar thing happen on my second activation where i switched bands too early and then couldn't get spotted again for like 10 minutes and it killed my momentum. now i keep the pota app open on my phone and re-spot the second i QSY. one thing i read somewhere was to also try posting in the POTA facebook group or whatever before you go out, like announcing your activation ahead of time, some hunters will actually schedule around that and be waiting for you when you start. havent tried it myself but people swear by it
