first time seriously doing CQ WW this year - any tips for someone whos mostly done Field Day stuff?

so ive been doing Field Day for the past three years with my local club and i always have a blast but its kind of a team thing you know, somebody else is usually running the station and im just logging or doing a few contacts here and there. this year i decided i want to actually sit down and do CQ WW SSB on my own from my home station and i honestly dont even know where to start in terms of strategy.

like Field Day always felt more relaxed, you grab a frequency, work a bunch of stations, eat some hot dogs, whatever. but CQ WW feels like a whole different world when i look at the scores people are posting. the multiplier system with zones is kind of confusing to me still - i get that youre trying to work as many DXCC entities and CQ zones as possible but how do people actually plan their operating time? do you just chase multipliers the whole time or run a frequency when you can?

im running an IC-7300 into a dipole up about 35 feet so nothing crazy. also been thinking about doing a SOTA activation before the contest season really kicks off just to get some more HF operating time under my belt. anyway any advice would be helpful, even basic stuff, im not too proud to admit i have a lot to learn here

CQ WW is definitely a step up from Field Day in terms of complexity but honestly the best thing i can tell you is just jump in and dont overthink it the first time. your 7300 and a dipole can do more than you think, especially if conditions cooperate on 15 or 10 meters when those bands are open.

the basic strategy most people use is a mix of running and search-and-pounce. early in the contest when you need multipliers, its usually worth spending time hunting around for new zones and entities rather than parking on a frequency. once youve got a decent multiplier count going you might find a clear spot and try to run if propagation supports it. zone 14 here in the northeast, we can usually get into Europe pretty well the first evening so i try to grab a frequency around 14.200 or so and just call CQ for a while before the Europeans go to bed.

N1MM Logger is basically the standard for contesting, if you arent using it already get familiar with it before the contest starts because trying to learn the software while also running stations is a mess. and yeah the SOTA activation is a great idea, nothing like operating portable to sharpen up your skills a bit

oh man i remember my first solo CQ WW, i think i made like 47 contacts the whole weekend and thought i was doing great lol. dont stress too much about the score, honestly just having fun and learning how contest operating works is the whole point at first.

one thing nobody told me early on - when the band sounds dead, dont just give up and go to bed. sometimes ill spin around and find 10 meters has cracked open to South America or something totally unexpected. the bands have been doing some weird stuff lately with the solar cycle picking up so you might get some nice surprises. good luck with it
