getting decent audio on SSB without spending a fortune on a new mic

so ive been running SSB on 40m and 20m for about a year now and i keep getting reports that my audio sounds thin or sometimes guys say it cuts out on the low end. im running an IC-7300 which honestly i thought would just handle everything but i guess the stock mic isnt doing me any favors. the HM-219 that ships with it isnt terrible but its not great either.

been reading a lot about compression settings and the ALC and honestly its gotten confusing fast. some guys say run as little compression as possible, others say crank it. i set my ALC to just barely touching the top of the meter during peaks and i thought that was right but now im second guessing everything. also not sure if my mic gain is set too high going into the radio - i sit maybe 4-5 inches from the mic when i talk which might be part of it.

anyone gone through this same thing and figured out a setup that actually works? not looking to drop 200 bucks on an Heil just yet, curious if there's a way to squeeze better audio out of what i have first

yeah the HM-219 is pretty mediocre tbh, but you can get decent results with it if you dial things in right. first thing id check is the TX bandwidth setting in the menu - on the 7300 you can set it to wide, mid, or narrow and a lot of guys leave it on narrow for some reason which cuts a lot of the presence frequencies. try setting it to mid or even wide and see if reports improve.

on the ALC thing - you actually want to set your mic gain so the ALC is barely moving, not sitting at the top. if its riding the top of the ALC meter youre probably pushing the modulator and getting that harsh processed sound. back the mic gain down until peaks just kiss the bottom third of the ALC scale. sounds counterintuitive but the audio cleans up a lot. compression is a whole other rabbit hole, id honestly just leave it off until you get the baseline audio sorted out first, then experiment from there.

the 4-5 inch distance is probably fine, some guys work better closer with quieter voices but dont stress that too much. biggest gains are gonna come from the bandwidth and ALC settings i think

ran into the exact same problem when i first got my 7300 actually. one thing nobody mentions is the bass boost setting buried in the menus - there's a TX tone adjustment that defaults to kind of flat and pushing the low-mid up a bit helped my audio sound less like im talking through a tin can. cant remember exactly which menu it is offhand but its in the set menu under tone or something like that.

also worth doing a quick WebSDR check on yourself if you havent - key up on a clear frequency, call CQ once or twice, and pull up a WebSDR receiver near you in a browser on your phone. you can literally hear what you sound like on the air and it takes all the guesswork out. changed how i think about my audio completely when i did that the first time
