first time trying CQ WW this year - what am I getting myself into lol

so i've been licensed for about 8 months now and i keep hearing people talk about CQ WW like its this huge deal and honestly i finally looked at the dates and its coming up pretty soon. i figured why not just throw myself into it and see what happens. i have a modest setup, just a kenwood ts-590 into a dipole up maybe 25 feet, nothing fancy at all.

my main question is like... how does it actually work in practice? i've read the rules on the CQ website and i sort of understand the zone multiplier thing but when i actually sit down at the radio during the contest it always feels chaotic. last time i tried ARRL Field Day i spent the first hour just confused about what was happening on the bands. is CQ WW similar or is it a totally different vibe? also is phone or CW easier for a newer person to jump in on, i can do maybe 10-12wpm so im not super fast

anyway any tips from people who have done it before would be great, i dont wanna just sit there spinning the dial the whole weekend

oh man CQ WW is so much fun, honestly just jump in and dont overthink it. the phone portion is usually a couple weeks before CW so you have options. for a newer op i'd actually say phone is easier to start because you dont have to decode anything under pile-up conditions, but CW at 10-12 wpm is totally doable in the slower moments especially if you use a logging program that helps with callsign lookup. N1MM is what most people use and it handles the dupe checking and multiplier tracking automatically which takes a huge load off your brain.

the basic exchange is just your callsign, signal report, and your CQ zone - zone 5 if you're in most of the eastern US, zone 3 or 4 if you're further west. DX stations send their zone too so you're collecting zones as multipliers which is where a lot of the strategy comes in. your dipole at 25 feet will get you more contacts than you'd think especially on 40 and 20. just start by searching and pouncing, meaning you tune around and answer stations rather than trying to hold a frequency. way less pressure that way when you're starting out.

yeah what he said, and also dont stress about your score your first time. i remeber my first CQ WW i was so worried about efficiency and rate and all that stuff and i burned myself out by Saturday night. just treat it like a big pile of DX stations all showing up at once, which is basically what it is. you'll work entities you might not hear again for months on a regular evening.

one thing nobody told me early on - keep a water bottle nearby and take breaks. sounds dumb but 48 hours goes fast and you stop thinking clearly if you dont pace yourself. also SOTA and Field Day have a totally different feel to CQ WW, FD is more team oriented and SOTA is super chill no pressure stuff, so if WW feels too intense those are good ways to get contest experience without the fire hose
