band conditions been weird this week - anyone else noticing this?

so ive been trying to work some DX the past few days and 17m has been all over the place. monday afternoon i had a solid opening into japan, like s7-s8 signals on JA stations no problem, then yesterday same time of day nothing. absolute dead silence. checked pskreporter and there were guys getting through but i couldnt hear a thing from my end.

solar flux index has been bouncing around a lot, saw it hit 178 the other day which i thought was pretty decent but then the K index spiked and i think that messed everything up. im still kinda learning how to read all the propagation forecasts and honestly the more i read about it the more confusing it gets. like i get the basic idea of the ionosphere reflecting signals but why does it vary so much day to day even when the solar numbers look similar?

is there some resource you guys actually find useful for predicting when a band is gonna be open? i've been using dxmaps and voacap but im not sure im interpreting them right

yeah 17m has been a rollercoaster lately. the SFI being up is good in theory but when the K index climbs above 3 or 4 it can really knock down the higher bands even if the solar flux looks favorable. the two kind of work against each other sometimes and its frustrating.

for forecasts i honestly just check W4MQ's propagation pages and DX World does a decent summary most mornings. VOACAP is good but you kind of have to take it as a rough guide not gospel - it doesnt account for the short term geomagnetic stuff at all. one thing that helped me a lot was just watching a band for a few days at the same time and getting a feel for when it tends to open to which part of the world. like 17m to asia from the east coast usually does its thing in the morning hours, late afternoon it tends to shift toward europe. once you get that intuition built up the propagation tools start making more sense because you have something to compare them against.

the JA opening you caught monday sounds pretty sweet btw, those can be brief so good that you were on at the right time

oh man i noticed the same thing, i was trying to work a 5-land station on 15m tuesday and couldnt even hear the beacon i normally use to check if the band is open. checked later and apparently there was a minor geomagnetic disturbance that afternoon. so annoying when you set aside time to operate and the ionosphere just doesnt cooperate lol

i started following the solar ham website on my phone and they push alerts when the K index starts rising which has been helpful at least for knowing when to give up and go watch tv instead
