asked a dumb question on the local net last night and now i'm overthinking everything

so i just got my technician license about three weeks ago and i've been listening to the tuesday night 2m net for a while before finally checking in last night. the net control asked if i had any traffic and i panicked and said 'negative' even though i actually wanted to ask if anyone knew a good spot to mount an antenna on a rental apartment. i just froze up.

anyway after the net ended i was kicking myself and got to wondering - is there like an unwritten rulebook for nets that i should know about? i know the basics like wait for a break, id every 10 minutes, dont key up while someone else is talking. but there seems to be a whole lot more going on that i'm missing. like when do you actually speak up vs just check in and stay quiet? and is it rude to ask a completely random question during a net that isnt really net business?

i dont want to be that guy who doesnt know what he's doing. already feel like everyone on frequency could tell i was nervous lol

oh man i remember that feeling exactly. first few times i checked into a net i was so worried about saying the wrong thing i barely said anything at all. honestly most nets have a general check-in period where you can ask stuff like that - your question about the antenna would have been totally fine. net control usually wraps up the formal traffic portion and then opens it up for comments, questions, announcements, whatever. that's really the time to speak up.

the thing nobody tells new hams is that most net controls actually like when people participate beyond just saying their callsign. it keeps things lively. just listen for when they say something like 'any further comments or questions before i close the net' - thats your window. and honestly even if you jumped in at the wrong moment, a good net control would just redirect you gently. nobody's going to eat you alive for being new, the vast majority of hams remember what it was like.

next tuesday just check in again and when they open it up, ask your question. you might be surprised how many people jump in to help.

dont overthink it, seriously. i made so many awkward moves on nets when i first started and nobody cared. one time i forgot to give my callsign at the end of a transmission and the net control just said 'station with the audio issue please identify' and i wanted to disappear but it was fine. you learn by doing.

the antenna question would have been totally welcome i think, most folks on those nets are just happy to chat after the formal stuff anyway.
