embarrassed myself on the weekly net last night, need some advice

so i finally worked up the nerve to check into the local 2m net last night after listening for like three months and i think i messed up pretty bad. when the net control called for check-ins i just keyed up and said my callsign without waiting to see if anyone else was already transmitting and i guess i doubled with somebody because net control had to ask everyone to repeat. then when it was my turn to give a traffic report i just said "no traffic" but apparently you're supposed to say like your name and location too? nobody told me that part.

anyway the net control was really nice about it and didnt make me feel too bad but i could tell i did it wrong. is there like a standard way these nets are supposed to go? i listened to a few more check-ins after mine and started to pick up the pattern but it was too late by then. dont want to make the same mistakes next week.

Oh don't sweat it too much, everyone does something like that their first time on a net. I remember my first check-in I forgot my callsign halfway through saying it, just completely blanked. Net control had heard it all before I'm sure.

The format varies a bit net to net but yeah most of them want something like your callsign, first name, location, and then whether you have traffic or announcements. Some nets also ask for signal report or whether you're mobile. Best thing to do is just listen to a few check-ins before yours and copy what they're doing. Also before keying up just pause for a second or two after net control finishes speaking - that little gap lets you hear if someone else jumped in first and saves you the double. You'll have it down by next week, no worries.

yeah i was in the same boat a few months ago. what helped me was i actually wrote out a little script on a notecard before the net started so i wouldnt forget anything when i got nervous. felt a bit silly doing it but it worked. now i dont need it anymore but that first couple times i was really glad i had it sitting next to the radio.
