Winlink through a local RMS gateway - can't get it to connect and not sure what im missing

so ive been trying to get Winlink Express set up for a few weeks now and i feel like im close but something is just not clicking. running a Signalink USB into a Kenwood TS-590SG, got the audio levels dialed in for Vara FM since thats what the local gateway seems to be using, but when i try to initiate a session with the RMS i get partway through the handshake and then it just drops. the gateway is listed as active on the Winlink map so its not like its offline.

i went through the usual stuff, PTT delay, checking that the radio is actually keying (it is, i can see the power output on the meter), made sure the frequency matches what the gateway is listed at. the weird part is occasionally it'll actually complete a session and pull mail down fine, but then the next time i try it falls apart again. its not consistent at all which is making this harder to diagnose.

anyone dealt with flaky connections to a specific RMS node before? wondering if its a timing issue with my PTT or maybe the gateway itself is having problems. i dont have another nearby gateway to test against which would at least help narrow it down.

the inconsistency is actually a pretty big clue here - if it were just your setup being wrong it would fail every time. my first guess would be the gateway operator's equipment or internet backhaul having issues, RMS gateways are only as reliable as whoever is running them and sometimes they have upstream connectivity hiccups that dont show up as the node going offline on the map right away.

that said, check your VARA FM settings and make sure your max connections or bandwidth setting isnt set too high for the path. also worth looking at the Winlink session logs after a failed attempt, there should be some error codes or at least a point where it cuts out that might tell you more. if you have access to a second radio you could also try connecting via telnet just to confirm your account and message handling side of things is working fine, then at least you know the RF path is the variable.

PTT tail timing can also cause weird intermittent failures if the radio is dropping PTT just slightly before VARA is done transmitting. try bumping your tail delay up a bit and see if that changes anything.

yeah i had almost the exact same thing happen when i first got on Winlink. turned out the gateway near me was being run off a pi that kept having memory issues and it would half-work for a while then fall over. the operator eventually got it sorted but for a couple months it was totally random whether a session would go through.

honestly if there's another gateway within range even if its further away or on a different band, worth trying it just to sanity check your end of things. i drove about 40 miles to a hamfest just to sit near someone running a pactor node and confirm my whole chain was working before i figured out it was actually the local RMS being flaky lol
