first POTA activation totally went sideways but still counts right?

so i finally got off my butt and did my first parks on the air activation last weekend at a state park about 40 minutes from my house. brought my ft-891 and a random wire antenna i threw up in a tree and honestly the whole thing was kind of a mess but i still made my 10 contacts so it counts as an activated park i think?

the main issue was i couldnt get the antenna tuner to cooperate on 40m for like the first 45 minutes and i was burning daylight because the park closes at sunset. ended up dropping down to 20m and the band was actually decent, got my 10 contacts in maybe 25 minutes once things started clicking. a couple hunters were really patient with me fumbling around on my first callsign exchange which i appreciated a lot.

anyway my question is mostly about the logging - do i need to upload to the POTA website within a certain timeframe or is there a grace period? i saw something about 7 days somewhere but wasnt sure if that was still accurate. also is there any etiquette thing about announcing yourself on the POTA spots page before you head out or do most activators just self-spot when theyre already set up?

congrats on the first one, the first activation is always a little chaotic and thats totally normal. 10 contacts is 10 contacts, park is activated, nobody can take that away from you.

on the logging question - yeah you have 7 days to upload your log to the pota.app website and thats been pretty consistent for a while now. just make sure your ADIF has the right park reference number in there (should be something like US-XXXX) or the site will kick it back at you. i made that mistake on my second activation and had to go back and manually edit like 30 entries which was not fun.

for spotting, most people self-spot once theyre actually on the air and have a signal. you can use the POTA app on your phone to do it right from the field which is really handy. some folks post on social media beforehand but thats more of a thing for big activations or if youre going somewhere rare. just get out there and spot yourself when youre ready, the hunters will find you pretty quick especially on a weekend.

yeah what he said about the log upload, 7 days is right. also just want to say as someone who hunts a lot more than i activate - we really dont mind when an activator is fumbling a bit, honestly its kind of refreshing because you can tell its a real person and not just a contest machine running 200 contacts an hour lol. the patient ones in the pileup probably remember their first time too.

one tip i wish someone told me earlier is to have a paper log as backup even if youre using an app like hamrs or sota goat. i had my phone die once halfway through and lost like 8 contacts which was annoying to try to reconstruct from memory later.
