first WWFF activation - was not quite what i expected but still had a blast

so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend at a local state forest, been meaning to do one for months and just kept putting it off. i had this idea it would be pretty straightforward since ive done a handful of SOTA activations and figured it was basically the same thing but... not quite.

biggest difference i noticed right away is that the reference boundaries can be kind of tricky. i was using the WWFF directory and the KFF reference i picked covers a pretty big area but i still wasnt 100% sure i was inside the boundary when i first set up. ended up moving about half a mile down the trail just to feel more confident about it. also the activation threshold is 44 QSOs which honestly caught me off guard, i thought it was less than that for some reason. ended up with 61 so i made it but i was sweating it around QSO 30 when things slowed down.

ran 40m and 20m with my KX2 and a linked dipole up in a tree, conditions were pretty decent. a lot of people hunting WWFF dont know your callsign ahead of time the way SOTA chasers seem to, so i had more pile-up confusion than usual. might just be that i dont know how to spot myself effectively yet. anyone have tips on how they handle that, like do you post to WWFF.world before you head out or do it from the field somehow

congrats on the first one, they're addicting trust me. on the spotting thing - i usually try to post a planned activation on WWFF.world the day before so the hunters know to look for you, and then spot yourself on the RBN or ask someone on the air to spot you when you get set up. some guys use their phone to self-spot but cell service is hit or miss in the parks around here so i dont always count on it.

44 QSOs is the threshold yeah, it tripped me up the first time too. you get used to pacing yourself once you know whats needed. the hunters are generally pretty patient if they know your frequency, just keep calling CQ WWFF and you'll pull people in. good first run though, 61 is solid especially if conditions weren't great

oh man the boundary thing is real, i spent like 20 minutes parked at a trailhead last fall trying to figure out if the reference started at the road or at the actual park sign. ended up just driving in further. probably overkill but better safe than sorry i guess. which KFF reference did you activate if you dont mind me asking
