confused about where exactly i can operate on 40m as a general

ok so i just upgraded from tech to general last month and im trying to figure out the 40 meter band. i know i have more privileges now but every chart i look at seems slightly different and im not sure which one is actually the official one vs just a suggestion or whatever.

like the ARRL band plan shows certain segments but then someone at my club said something about staying away from the band edges and i dont really understand why. is there an actual rule about that or is it just a courtesy thing? and whats the deal with the phone/data divide, is that a hard line or can it shift depending on conditions or something

basically just trying to figure out where i can actually transmit without stepping on someone or doing something wrong

so the short version is there are two different things going on -- the FCC part 97 allocations which are actual law, and then the ARRL band plan which is basically a gentlemens agreement on top of that. your license class privileges are the legal part, everything else is just convention that most people follow to keep things organized.

for 40m as a general you get phone from 7.175 to 7.300 MHz, below that down to 7.025 is where you can do CW and digital modes. the 7.125 to 7.175 chunk is where extra class gets the extra phone space. those numbers are the actual FCC lines, not suggestions.

the band edge thing your club guy mentioned is real practical advice though. if your rig isnt perfectly calibrated or your signal has a little splatter you dont want to bleed outside your allocation. most people try to stay at least a few kHz inside the edge just to be safe. especially on the lower end where you'd be going into territory you're not licensed for if you drift. nobody wants an OO notice over a calibration issue.

yeah what he said, also worth knowing that 40m gets kinda wild depending on time of day and season. during the day its more regional, at night it opens up and you get a lot of DX and sometimes interference from broadcast stations especially on the lower end of the band. so where you operate might kinda depend on whats actually usable at that moment more than anything else honestly. i spent like an hour trying to have a ragchew around 7.250 one evening and kept getting walked on by what sounded like a spanish language broadcaster. just part of the deal on that band
