first POTA activation went sideways but still counts i think?

so i finally did my first ever Parks on the Air activation last weekend at a state forest about 45 minutes from my house (K-4829 if anyone knows it) and wow i was not prepared for how much i was second guessing myself the whole time

i brought my ft-891 and a random wire up in a tree, took me forever to get it tuned up and by the time i actually started calling CQ POTA i only had like an hour of daylight left. ended up with 12 QSOs on 40m which i know technically counts as a valid activation but it felt kind of hollow? like i wanted to do more and the band was getting noisy toward the end

also i had no idea how many hunters would just be waiting and pouncing the second i spotted myself on the POTA website. that part was actually really cool, went from zero responses to a pileup in maybe 2 minutes which i was not expecting at all as a fairly new tech - well i just got my general last spring

anyway just wondering if anyone has tips for getting set up faster in the field, the antenna situation ate up way too much of my time

12 QSOs absolutely counts, dont let anyone tell you otherwise. the minimum is 10 and youre over it so thats a valid activation, log it and move on. the first one is always kind of chaotic, i think i took almost 2 hours just to get my station together my first time out and barely squeaked by with 10 contacts

for getting set up faster honestly the biggest thing that helped me was practicing at home. like i actually go out in the backyard and time myself setting up the antenna and radio before i take it to a park. sounds silly but it makes a real difference when youre fighting fading light or bugs or whatever

also worth looking into a linked dipole or a EFHW with a 49:1 unun if you havent already - those tend to tune up a lot faster than a random wire in my experience, less fussing with the tuner. but whatever you used worked well enough so dont overthink it

yeah the pileup thing after self-spotting is wild right, i remember my first time i spotted myself and then just sat there for a second like wait do i just start calling again and suddenly there were like 6 people calling me at once and i panicked lol

one thing i've started doing is pre-spotting like 10-15 mins before im actually ready so hunters know im coming. some people do that, some dont but it does help get the crowd warmed up. you do have to actually be on freq and ready by then though or people get annoyed
