first POTA activation didn't go quite as planned but still a good time

so i finally did my first parks on the air activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from me (K-4857 for anyone curious). ive been hunting for maybe 6 months and kept telling myself id get out and actually do an activation eventually so i finally just committed to it.

brought my FT-891 and a linked dipole i made from a kit, threw it up between two trees with a 33 foot mast and honestly the setup went way smoother than i expected. the nightmare part was the logging - i was using HAMRS on my phone and kept fumbling the keyboard with cold fingers and i think i entered a couple callsigns wrong. had to slow way down and ask people to repeat which felt awkward but everyone was super patient.

ended up with 14 contacts in about an hour and a half which i know qualifies the park but i really wanted to hit 20. 40 meters was kind of rough that afternoon, lots of QSB, and i never really got the hang of when to switch to 17 or 20. i spotted myself on the pota.app which helped a lot, had a small pileup for maybe 10 minutes which was wild for a first timer.

anyone have tips on managing band changes during an activation? like do you just announce it on the current freq before you QSY or what? and how do people handle the log corrections after the fact if you know you got a callsign wrong

congrats on the first one, 14 contacts absolutely counts and the park is activated so dont stress the number. it gets way easier after a few times out.

for band changes what i usually do is just say something like "QSY to 20 meters, monitoring 14.244" or whatever, give it a couple calls, then update your spot on pota.app with the new freq. a lot of hunters are watching the spots more than they're scanning so if you dont update the spot you'll lose people fast. some guys also spot themselves on both bands for a few minutes during the transition which works pretty well.

on the log corrections - just do your best and submit what you have. the POTA team knows activator logs arent perfect and a lot of times the hunter's log will fill in the gap anyway. if you genuinely have no idea what a callsign was just leave a note in the submission, ive seen people do that and its not a big deal. the system cross references both sides so it usually works out.

yeah i had the same cold fingers problem on my second activation lol, ended up buying one of those little bluetooth keyboards that sits in my lap and it helped a ton. also switched to RumLog on the iPad which has bigger buttons basically.

one thing that helped me with the band thing - i started paying attention to what bands the hunters were asking for when i was on the other side of the mic. like youll notice people will call in and mention "any chance of 20?" so now when i activate i just kind of feel it out based on what im hearing and what the hunters are asking. 40 in the afternoon can be rough depending on the time of year, 17 and 20 are usually more predictable mid day at least around here in the midwest
