  1. so i passed my general last spring and joined our county ARES group back in August. been going to the monthly nets and one tabletop exercise but this weekend is my first actual activation — local marathon with like 4000 runners and they want amateur radio support at the aid stations and finish line for medical coordination. my EC told me to bring my HT and a spare battery and show up at the staging area by 0630 but i dont really know what the actual flow looks like once things get going. like do i just sit there and wait for something to happen or is there constant chatter on the net? and what if i hear something i dont know how to handle? i dont want to freeze up and have someone not get help because i messed up a relay. any tips from people whove done these public service events before would be great. im a little nervous honestly
  2. the echolink crossover idea isnt as crazy as you think — ive seen guys do allstar nodes that also tie into remote HF access through a portal so dispatching a signal path across both VHF linking and HF remote in the same session. mostly for emcomm testing but it works. the tricky part is the audio levels and who has control at any given moment gets complicated fast. for what its worth i just keep my remote setup dead simple, teamviewer into a windows box running the radio's native software. ugly solution but i have had zero unexplained crashes in like 18 months so. sometimes boring is better.
  3. so anyway i finally got my go kit together last year after procrastinating forever and ended up using it during that big storm we had. honestly wish id started simpler - i went crazy buying all sorts of stuff and half of it just sits there. start with basics like your radio, power source, simple antenna, and some way to log contacts. you can always add more later but having something ready is better than having nothing at all
  4. so my neighbor got his license last year and basically convinced me to try it out and now im trying to figure out how to study for the technician exam. i downloaded a bunch of stuff but honestly its kind of overwhelming. like i found the question pool pdf on the arrl site or maybe it was the fcc site i cant remember but theres like 400 something questions and i dont know if i should just memorize all of them or actually try to understand the material. also someone told me to use hamstudy.org but then another person said to get the arrl tech manual. do i need both? i feel like im overcomplicating this but i just want to pass the first time and not have to retake it
  5. yeah the message handling thing is a pretty universal pain point from what ive seen. Our group went through the same thing a couple years back. What ended up working for us was basically doing a 15-minute "traffic drill" at the start of every monthly meeting before we get into the boring business stuff. Just one or two operators pass a practice radiogram, everyone else listens and we talk through what went right or wrong. People seem way more willing to do it when its baked into something they're already showing up for. The disappearing message situation you described — we actually made a rule that relay stations have to verbally confirm receipt AND log the message number before the originating station considers it passed. Sounds obvious but its one of those things that only becomes obvious after it goes wrong in an exercise. Which is kind of the whole point of doing the sims honestly.
  6. honest answer? the baofeng will probably work fine for what you described. ive got one sitting in my go bag and yeah the menu system is a nightmare and the stock antenna is garbage but replace the antenna with a decent nagoya and it hits repeaters just fine. the build quality thing is real though — the feel is just cheap, like if you drop it on concrete youre probably buying another one. that said if youre even slightly serious about staying in the hobby i'd probably stretch to the FT-65 or something from Yaesu or Kenwood just because the receiver is noticeably better and programming it doesnt make you want to throw it out a window. the FT-70D is fine but fusion repeaters are spotty depending on where you live, worth checking repeaterbook before you decide that matters to you.
  7. no hard rule on it really, it kind of depends on conditions and context. if youre just making a quick call on a clear local repeater where everyone knows you, nobody cares if you just say your call normally. but if theres any QRM or the signal is marginal, phonetics are your friend because letters like B, C, D, E, P, T all sound the same in a hash. the NATO alphabet exists specifically because those words were chosen to be distinct even through noise and accents. general practice though is you at least give phonetics the first time you identify, especially if youre calling CQ or checking into a net where the net control might not know your call. after that you can drop them if comms are clean. youll figure out pretty quick when you need them and when you dont, just listen to how other guys on your repeater handle it
  8. I recommend an external antenna tuner/match. Most built-in tuners will match the impedance of an antenna up to 3:1, and external antenna tuner such as an LDG Z-11 Pro II or LDG Z-100A which will match up to 10:1. External tuners give you much more flexibility with different antenna types.
  9. After six months of using FlexRadio's SmartLink for remote operation, I wanted to share some observations about internet linking versus traditional RF remote control methods. Traditional RF linking methods don't have this single point of failure.
  10. so ive been on the air for maybe 3 months now, got my technician and then upgraded to general pretty quick, and i keep hearing and seeing all these weird abbreviations that i just dont know. like QSL, QRM, QSO, QTH... i know QSL is like a confirmation card thing? but people throw them around in conversation too and im not always sure what they mean in context. also saw someone type 73 at the end of a message and had to look that one up. is there like a standard list somewhere or do you just kind of pick these up over time. also are there ones that are more important to know vs ones that are kinda obscure and rarely used in practice. i feel like ive been just nodding along half the time on digital modes especially and i dont want to look clueless when i respond
  11. the timing thing is real and a lot of guys dont figure it out. theres actually a kind of natural rhythm to how a good DX op works a pileup — they transmit, the pile responds, there's this brief moment of chaos, then usually a short lull before they come back with a partial call or a full callsign. if you can slip in during that lull youre not competing with a hundred guys, youre competing with maybe a dozen. its still hard but its way better odds. one thing i'll add that took me forever to learn is listening to what the DX op is actually saying when they respond. if they come back with a partial like "Whiskey 4" then every station that doesnt have a W4 callsign should shut up. but they dont, they all keep calling and it just turns into a mess. being disciplined about not transmitting when youre obviously not being called is weirdly one of the best ways to eventually get through because the ops remember who's being a good citizen and sometimes that gets you a spot. also on equipment — the yagi makes a huge difference but dont sleep on receive either. a lot of guys have mediocre receive and they cant actually hear where the DX is listening so they just spray calls all over the split window hoping for a hit. getting a better rx setup or even just a good bandpass filter cleaned up my ability to actually track what was happening.
  12. I've been running a similar setup for over a year now. The key is optimizing your Pi's SD card - use a high-quality Class 10 card and ensure you're using a proper power supply. Also check your network jitter - even small amounts like 6ms can affect audio quality.
  13. tail-ending is real but you have to be careful with it because if you clip the end of the contact you'll just annoy the DX op and get skipped intentionally. the timing thing you figured out is basically the same idea though. what i've found is the real edge is figuring out the DX operators listening pattern — some of them sweep high to low, some do the opposite, some just pick random spots. after a few QSOs in a row you can usually hear where they're going and set your VFO ahead of time. takes patience but works way better than just calling blind in the middle. also 600w into a 4el is more than enough for most paths when conditions cooperate. a lot of times guys with kilowatts and stacks still get blown out because they're calling at the wrong time. power helps less than people think once you're above a certain threshold.
  14. Jump in on CQ WW SSB, seriously just do it. Nobody cares if youre new, the exchange is literally just your call sign and your zone number, thats it. You give them 59 and your zone and move on. With a TS-590 youre honestly better equipped than a lot of people who show up to these things. Attic dipole might limit your score but you'll still make contacts, especially on 40m during the evenings when europe starts coming in. For the CW weekend yeah you'd want to be able to at least copy at maybe 10-15 wpm to really participate, but plenty of people just tune around and listen even if they dont submit a log. Thats actually a decent way to practice honestly. And yes youre right that SOTA is different, its an awards program where you activate summits and other people try to chase you, some folks do both contesting and SOTA but they're separate things. Start with Field Day or CQ WW SSB, get your feet wet, worst case you make 20 contacts and learn a ton.
