okay so i passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and ive been lurking here reading threads but i still cant make up my mind on an HT. my plan is mostly local repeater stuff, maybe some simplex with a buddy who lives about 8 miles away, and eventually i want to get into APRS but thats not urgent right now.

ive been looking at the Baofeng UV-5R because honestly the price is hard to argue with, but then everyone says get a Yaesu FT-65 or a Wouxun and i dont know if the extra money is actually worth it for a new person who might decide this hobby isnt for them. then i went down a rabbit hole about the Yaesu FT-70D for the fusion capability but i dont even know if there are any fusion repeaters near me.

i guess my real question is — does the build quality difference actually matter that much day to day, or is this one of those things where the experienced guys are just being snobby about the cheap stuff. not trying to be rude i just want an honest take from people who have actually used both.

honest answer? the baofeng will probably work fine for what you described. ive got one sitting in my go bag and yeah the menu system is a nightmare and the stock antenna is garbage but replace the antenna with a decent nagoya and it hits repeaters just fine. the build quality thing is real though — the feel is just cheap, like if you drop it on concrete youre probably buying another one.

that said if youre even slightly serious about staying in the hobby i'd probably stretch to the FT-65 or something from Yaesu or Kenwood just because the receiver is noticeably better and programming it doesnt make you want to throw it out a window. the FT-70D is fine but fusion repeaters are spotty depending on where you live, worth checking repeaterbook before you decide that matters to you.

i was in the exact same spot last year lol ended up getting the UV-5R because i was nervous about spending money on something i might not stick with. used it for about four months and it was fine, got me on the local repeater, talked to some people, figured out i actually liked this stuff. then i got a Kenwood TH-D74A which is like... a completely different universe, but obviously thats overkill for starting out. my point is dont overthink it, just get something and get on the air, you can always upgrade later and the baofengs hold their resale value surprisingly okay.
