  1. so ive been chasing 3Y0 and some of the other rare ones for years now and never really had a system, just kind of called like everyone else and hoped for the best. last month there was a decent activity from a pacific island i wont name (dont want to start a whole thing) and i finally got through after about 45 minutes of trying different stuff and i figured id share what actually made a difference because a lot of the advice i read online feels kind of theoretical. the biggest thing that helped was listening way more than i was transmitting. sounds obvious but i was honestly just keying up too much before. once i actually mapped out where the DX station was listening — he was working split, about 5 up, and slowly drifting higher — i just waited until i could hear the tail end of who he was working and then dropped my call once, cleanly, right at the right moment. no multiple calls, no sending my call three times in a row like some guys do. also reduced power slightly which i know sounds backwards but i was probably over-driving my amp a little and cleaning up the signal seemed to help. running an IC-7610 into a AL-811H and my signal was probably a bit splattered before i backed it off. antenna is a 3 ele yagi at about 45ft pointed at the pacific so nothing exotic. anyway curious what other guys do, especially on CW. phone pileups feel a bit different to me but the listen-first thing probably applies there too
  2. Just deployed an Emergency Winlink Gateway during our county exercise using Xiegu G106 HF rig with LiNK500 modem for RPR, backed up by Starlink Mini for internet connectivity to CMS. Running QRP at 5 watts, served multiple operators during the simulated outage scenario. The EWG acts as a bridge between radio-connected users and internet-based Winlink CMS, allowing email over radio with or without internet access. System can operate radio-to-internet or radio-only mode, storing messages locally during outages and auto-forwarding when connectivity returns via RMS Relay. Power consumption was excellent on LiFePO4 batteries. Anyone else running similar hybrid setups? Interested in comparing power budgets and deployment strategies.
  3. i was in the same boat about a year ago lol. i used the gordon west tech study book which some people swear by but honestly hamstudy dot org is probably better just because its free and tracks your progress. the hardest part for me was the electrical theory stuff like ohms law and reading simple circuits but theres youtube videos that explain it pretty well if you just search for technician license exam prep or whatever. also check if there are any ham clubs in your area because a lot of them do free license classes and sometimes even pay for your first exam session which is normally like 15 bucks. my local club did a one day cram session on a saturday and like half the people there passed that same day at the testing session afterwards. good luck, its not as hard as it looks

  5. so i finally broke down and decided to learn CW properly. been a ham for about 6 years and always used phone and digital modes but kept seeing guys on the air having these long ragchews on 40m CW that sounded so relaxed and i dont know, it just made me want to try it. ive been using the G4FON trainer on my laptop for a few weeks now and im getting pretty comfortable copying around 10-12 wpm in practice sessions but when i actually try to send with my straight key it comes out terrible. timing is all over the place. a friend told me i should just go ahead and get a paddle and an iambic keyer and that would help more than the straight key for actually getting on the air. my question is, is that true? like should i stick with the straight key until im better or does moving to a paddle actually help with the consistency issue. also there are so many keyers out there and i dont really know what the difference is between all the different iambic modes and stuff. any thoughts from people who actually went through this would be helpful. not looking to spend a ton of money but want something decent to learn on.
  6. i had the exact same problem with a used set of paddles i got off ebay. turned out one of the contact screws was slightly bent and the gap was totally uneven side to side. i spent like two weeks thinking i just sucked at sending before someone at the club looked at it and spotted it immediately. might be worth having someone who knows paddles take a look at yours before you spend too much time adjusting technique around a mechanical problem.
  7. I've never actually been to a big hamfest before, been a tech for about 8 months now. is it worth going even if you dont really have money to spend? like can you just walk around and look at stuff or is it mostly for buying and selling
  8. ok so ive been looking at the band plan charts and honestly i'm more confused than before i started. i just upgraded to General last month and i know i have more privileges now but i'm not totally sure where i'm actually allowed to transmit on 40 meters. like the FCC allocation and the ARRL band plan seem like two different things? and then theres the whole thing about band edges that my elmer was warning me about but didnt fully explain. do i just stay away from 7.000-7.025 or what? i dont want to accidentally transmit somewhere i shouldnt be
  9. Weather can change fast up there so maybe bring a light jacket even if it looks nice at the bottom. And double check that your battery is actually charged the night before - learned that one the hard way! W6/SC-001 is a great choice for a first activation, pretty straightforward trail.   10. so ive been running APRS for about 6 months now, mostly just tracker stuff with my D710 in the truck, and it works great for that. i can see myself moving around on aprs.fi no problem. but lately ive been trying to actually use the messaging side of it and i cant get messages to go through reliably at all. sometimes they get there, sometimes they just disappear into the void. my setup is the D710 feeding into the radio through the built in TNC, path is set to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 which i thought was pretty standard. the digi here in town is pretty active, i can see packets from it constantly on RF. but when i send a message to another station i either get an ack back eventually or nothing, and the other guy says he never sees it on his end. it seems random. is this a path issue or is something else going on? i tried tightening the path to just WIDE1-1 and that didn't seem to change anything. honestly not sure if its a problem on my end or just the network being the network.
  11. the pvc box feedpoint is something ive done too and it works but just keep an eye on it after heavy rain, i had one start letting moisture in after about 8 months and it threw my swr all over the place before i figured out what was happening. coax seal or self-amalgamating tape around the coax entry point is worth doing if you havent already.
  12. so ive been doing contests pretty seriously for about 3 years now, mostly single band stuff but lately ive been running SO2R on some of the bigger weekends like CQWW and sweepstakes and honestly im not sure if im actually gaining rate or just stressing myself out more my setup right now is an IC-7300 on the run radio and an old TS-570 as the second radio, running them both through a microHAM station master for the switching and bandpass filters from Array Solutions, nothing fancy but it works okay. the issue is my brain hasnt caught up with the hardware yet if that makes sense. like ill be calling CQ on 20 and miss a dupe check on the second radio because im trying to do two things at once for people who have actually gotten SO2R to click — how long did it realistically take before it stopped feeling like youre juggling chainsaws. and is there a particular contest that works better for learning the workflow, like is a shorter sprint style thing better to practice on than a 48 hour marathon

SWR matters just as much at QRP levels, maybe more actually because you have so little power to waste. if youre running 300mw into a bad match you might actually be radiating closer to 100mw or less after losses, and at that point youre really fighting an uphill battle. with higher power rigs people kind of get away with a mediocre match because they have headroom to burn. you dont. for your park setup honestly just bring a length of wire, like 40 feet or so, throw it up as high as you can in a tree and use a simple 9:1 unun or even just a tuner if you have one. the antenna is everything with QRP. ive worked stations 2000 miles away with 5 watts and a wire in a tree and i couldnt do the same with 100 watts into a dummy load. the Pixie is a fun little rig, enjoy it. just manage your expectations a bit since CW is really the sweet spot for those kits and if youre trying SSB you'll have a harder time of it.
  14. yeah the freezing up thing is totally normal, dont let it discourage you. one thing i read somewhere was to not go back and try to figure out what you missed, just keep moving forward in the text. your brain catches up eventually if you stop trying to decode every single character the moment you hear it. also the LCWO word training mode helped me more than the character training once i had the alphabet down, copying whole common words at speed is really different from copying letters one by one
  15. honestly i tried SO2R once and it completely wrecked my focus for the whole contest, went back to single radio and my score actually went up lol. might just be a personal thing, some guys are wired for that kind of split attention and some arent. if your single radio rate is already solid you might get more mileage just tightening up your exchange timing and making sure your antenna is pointed right during the peak propagation windows than fighting with all the SO2R plumbing that said if you do want to pursue it there's some good stuff in the N6TR and K3LR write-ups about station layout and keyer setup, N1MM+ has pretty decent SO2R support built in now too with the radio focus switching. just dont expect miracles the first time out
  16. that's really cool to hear, congrats on your first activation. i've been licensed for almost two years and keep meaning to get involved with our county ARES group but always find a reason to put it off. your post is kind of a kick in the pants for me honestly. quick question though — did they have a specific go-kit requirement to participate or did you just show up with whatever you had? i've heard some groups are pretty particular about what radios and modes they expect you to have ready and i wasnt sure if i'd need to get more equipment before joining.
  17. your club guy is wrong, techs absolutely can do phone on 10 meters. you get 28.300 to 28.500 MHz for SSB and AM, up to 200 watts PEP. thats the main phone privilege you have on HF. on 40 meters techs only get CW, no phone, its a pretty narrow slice around 7.025 to 7.125 i think, you'd want to double check the exact edges in part 97.301. same story on 15 and 80 meters, CW only. 10 meters is really where techs can actually have some fun with voice. honestly 10 meters when its open is fantastic anyway so its not a bad deal
  18. nice work. i did my first sota last spring and same thing, totally overthought it for months. brought way too much gear up the hill and regretted it immediately lol. portable ops have a way of teaching you real fast what you actually need vs what you thought you needed
  19. so ive been on HF for about two years now mostly doing digital modes but lately ive been trying to get into SSB phone and honestly my audio reports have been pretty bad. people keep telling me i sound muffled or like im talking through a towel. im running an IC-7300 with the stock hand mic that came in the box and im just talking into it like i would a normal phone i guess. did some reading and it seems like mic gain and the speech processor settings matter a lot more than i thought. i have the compression cranked up pretty high because i figured more is better for getting through pileups but maybe thats the issue? also not sure if i should be running ALC all the way up or leaving some headroom there. my TX EQ is all flat right now because i have no idea what to actually do with it. any tips appreciated, been kind of embarrassing getting bad audio reports when im trying to work some of the louder DX stations
  20. so ive been doing contests for maybe 4-5 years now mostly single op single radio and i keep reading about SO2R and how it supposedly transforms your rate but every time i look into setting it up it seems like a massive rabbit hole of hardware, software, antenna switching, interference between radios, the whole thing my current setup is an IC-7300 and i was thinking about picking up a used TS-590 as a second radio but then you need band decoders, some kind of SO2R controller, sort out the audio routing, and make sure the two rigs arent blowing each others front ends out when youre transmitting on one and listening on the other my antennas are a 3 element yagi for 20/15/10 and a trapped vertical for 40/80 so theres at least some separation there but still. is it actually worth doing for someone who doesnt operate every major contest, maybe 6-8 a year? i feel like id spend more time debugging the station than actually contesting what did rate improvements actually look like for people who made the switch, like realistically not the top guns at K3LR or whatever
  21. yeah im kind of in the same boat as you, been at it for maybe 6 weeks now using an app called Morse Mania which is pretty decent for drilling individual characters. honestly the hardest part for me wasnt learning the sounds it was just getting my hand to actually send cleanly on a straight key. like my head knows what i want to send but my fist does something else entirely lol. might try a paddle at some point but i feel like i should at least get the basics down first. anyway not sure i have much advice but you're definitely not alone in finding it confusing where to start
  22. yeah the battery thing is so real, you'd be amazed how many people dont rotate their batteries or even just plug the HT in once a month to top it off. we started requiring everyone in our group to do a quick gear check the week before any drill, just turn it on, verify it transmits, check that your written freq list is current. sounds basic but it cut down on that exact problem a lot. the alternate frequency thing is a really common one too. our section has a published EOP with primary and alternate freqs but half the people showing up for drills have either never read it or forgot it at home. we actually started laminating a little card with the freq plan and ICS basics and handing them out at the start of every exercise. its a small thing but people actually use them. also the cognitive load thing — 100%. thats specifically why i think tabletop exercises have real value even though some operators kind of look down on them. getting the mental side practiced separately from the physical side means when you combine them its not completely overwhelming. sounds like your group did a solid first run though, those lessons you pulled out are exactly the right ones
  23. yeah i run basically that exact setup, N1MM for anything contest related and Log4OM as the permanent shack log. the ADIF import usually works fine honestly, main thing to watch out for is making sure your contest exchanges are mapped somewhere useful before you export, because N1MM stuffs some of that into comment or SRX/STX fields and Log4OM doesnt always know what to do with it depending on the contest type. for things like sweepstakes it can get a little weird but for a standard serial number exchange contest its pretty clean. on the WSJT-X thing i just have it log directly to its own ADIF and then import that into Log4OM manually every few sessions. tried the UDP logging route into Log4OM once and it kept dropping spots or duplicating things, maybe i had something configured wrong but i gave up on it pretty quick. the manual import is maybe 30 seconds of work so i dont really care anymore
