  1. ok so ive been licensed about 8 months now and ive been making contacts pretty regularly, mostly HF on 40 and 20m, some FT8 and occasional SSB. and i keep seeing people mention LoTW, eQSL, and also just mailing physical cards and i honestly cant figure out what the difference really is or which one i should be bothering with. like i understand the basic concept — you log a contact, the other person logs the same contact, and then it gets confirmed somehow. but why are there three different systems? do i need all of them? i set up a LoTW account a few weeks ago and uploaded my first logs but i have no idea if anything confirmed or how to even check. and then someone in a pileup told me to send my card to their bureau address and i wasnt even sure what bureau meant in that context. mostly asking because i want to eventually go for DXCC and i heard LoTW is the main one for that but i dont want to miss out on confirming stuff if people only use one of the other systems. any guidance appreciated, this part of the hobby is weirdly more confusing than actually operating
  2. so i heard the Tri-County hamfest is back this year after they skipped it the last couple years, supposed to be at the fairgrounds again. im thinking of going and hauling some stuff to sell at the tailgate, got a bunch of old HF gear taking up space in the shack that i really need to get rid of. anyone else planning on going or know if the club is doing a forum or anything this time around
  3. yeah the telnet connection through logging software is kind of the old school way and some people swear by it, personally i just keep a browser tab open to dxwatch and refresh it every few minutes lol. not the most sophisticated setup but it works fine for me. one thing i'll add is the QRZ logbook has a built in spot checker type thing if you click around enough, though i find it a little clunky compared to just watching the cluster directly. oh and if you're on iOS the HamSphere app has cluster integration but i havent used it in a while so not sure how current it is
  4. okay so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (tech, studying for general) and i keep seeing people talk about checking into nets but honestly every time i tune in i freeze up and dont know when to jump in or what to say. like is there a specific format or do people just say their call and that's it? i tried listening to the 2m local net last tuesday and the net control was going through check-ins and i genuinely couldn't figure out when there was a pause long enough for me to transmit without stepping on someone. also i saw something about a special event station this weekend for some kind of anniversary, W1 something, and i wanted to try working them but same problem — not sure if theres a protocol or if i just call them like a normal QSO. any help appreciated, still very much learning here
  5. i was in the exact same spot like six months ago lol. ended up getting the baofeng BF-F8HP and honestly its fine for what i do which is basically just the same as you described. got chirp figured out in an afternoon with a youtube video, wasnt that bad. the higher power output is kinda nice if youre on the edge of a repeater's range i guess, not sure how much it actually helps in practice but it made me feel better ha one thing nobody told me — get a better antenna for whatever you buy. the rubber duck antennas that come with basically all these cheap HTs are pretty mediocre, picked up a nagoya NA-771 for like ten bucks and it made a noticeable difference on a couple repeaters i was barely hitting before.
  6. so ive been a general for about 3 years now and i keep putting off the extra because everyone tells me the theory section is brutal. like i do fine with practical stuff, built a couple antennas, do some HF contesting here and there, but i never really went deep into the math behind filters and impedance matching and all that. the question pool has stuff in there about things i honestly never learned properly even back when i got my general. my actual question i guess is — for people who didnt come from an engineering background, how long did you spend studying and what resources actually helped. i tried reading through the ARRL extra class manual once and kind of lost interest around the oscillator chapter. is there a better way to approach it or do i really just need to grind through the question pool and hope i absorb it
  7. yeah the IQ streaming approach is definitely more flexible once you get it dialed in. i ran a similar setup for about a year with an IC-7300 and feeding the IQ back over the internet let me run WSJT-X locally which was huge for FT8. latency is basically a non issue for that mode anyway so it worked great. the tricky part is your upload bandwidth at the remote end — you need pretty consistent throughput or the SDR client starts dropping samples and you get decode failures. i was running about 3-4 Mbps upstream just for the IQ stream at a modest sample rate, so make sure whatever connection is at your parents place can handle that plus the control traffic. the RemoteHams SDR client itself is a bit clunky honestly. its not wideband like WebSDR or anything, its more like a remote head replacement that happens to pass IQ, so dont go in expecting something that feels like SDRuno. but for the functional stuff it gets the job done.
  8. so i finally got out and did my first SOTA activation last weekend, summit was only a 2 mile hike which i figured would be easy but man carrying the gear up there is a whole different thing than just hiking. i brought my ft-818 and a buddistick clone i built and honestly the setup took way longer than i expected cause i kept second guessing where to put the counterpoise. wind was also brutal up top so the antenna kept wanting to fall over. ended up making 4 contacts before i just gave up and packed out. i know you need 4 for a valid activation so technically i made it but barely. felt a little anticlimactic i guess. anyone else struggle their first few times out or is it just me being bad at this
  9. ok so i passed my technician exam about 3 weeks ago and ive been trying to figure out exactly what frequencies im allowed to operate on and its honestly more confusing than i expected. i read through part 97 but some of it is really dense and i feel like im missing something. like i get that i have HF privileges on 10m but only certain portions right? and then theres the whole thing about phone vs cw vs digital modes and which ones i can use where. my main question i guess is where do i find a really clear breakdown of this because the FCC document itself is kind of hard to parse. also someone at my local club told me techs can do some stuff on 40m but i dont think thats right? or maybe it is and im wrong. just want to make sure im not accidentally transmitting somewhere im not supposed to be
  10. so ive been a Tech for about two years now and mostly just been doing 2m/70cm stuff with my local repeaters and some simplex. i keep hearing people talk about HF and honestly it sounds really cool but im not sure if im ready to tackle the General exam. like i remember the Tech exam being not too bad but i heard General is a lot harder with all the electrical theory stuff and propagation and i dont really have a background in electronics at all. has anyone gone through this recently? how long did you study and what did you use? i found the hamstudy.org site which seems pretty good but wondering if there are other resources people actually recommend. also is the HF stuff worth it once you get the license or is it kind of overhyped? i guess im also wondering what bands you actually get with General because i looked it up and got confused about the chart with all the segments

QRZ.com is also a callsign lookup website which throws people off when they first hear it mentioned, like is someone asking whos calling or talking about a website lol. context is everything honestly. dont stress too much about it before your ticket, most of it just clicks once you get on air and start actually talking to people

QRZ is the one that tripped me up when i first started, i kept thinking it was some kind of question about signal quality but nope its basically just who is calling. now i use it all the time when i cant make out a callsign. the fading thing, QSB, yeah that gets mentioned a lot on 40 especially in the evenings when propagation gets weird. dont worry about not knowing them all right away, ive been licensed two years and still occasionally have to look one up
  13. Working on optimizing my IC-7300 SSB audio and wondering about the practical differences between the built-in speech processor and external compression. Manual suggests keeping ALC between 30-50% with processing off, but I'm seeing better average power with processing enabled. Currently running mic gain at 35% with processor level at 60%. Some suggest much lower mic gain settings (5%) can still achieve full 100W PEP with proper setup. What's your experience with finding the sweet spot between intelligibility and splatter? Too much processor input creates that harsh Darth Vader sound and drives background noise, but I need the extra punch for DX work. Anyone found good baseline settings for the 7300's DSP chain?
  14. haha yeah my first one i hiked up with everything set up perfectly and then my battery was basically dead because i left it on in the car for like 3 hours while i drove to the trailhead. got maybe 6 contacts before it died and i was running like 2 watts at the end. now i always check voltage before i even start the hike. congrats on qualifying though, that first one always feels good even when it goes sideways
  15. so we've got a county-wide exercise coming up and i'm trying to figure out the best way to power the station without just running a genset the whole time. last exercise we had a honda eu2200i running basically nonstop for like 6 hours and yeah it worked fine but the noise was annoying, the fuel logistics were kind of a pain, and i kept worrying about CO near the tent. just not ideal. this time i'm thinking about going with a lifepo4 battery setup, probably two 100ah batteries wired in parallel, running the ic-7300 and a small laptop. rough math puts me at maybe 20-25ah per hour under normal ops, so that should get me through the exercise without needing a recharge. but we also have a go-kit HF station with a higher duty cycle for digital modes and that's where i'm not sure the math holds up. for the antenna side i'm planning to bring the end-fed halfwave again, it's just so easy to set up, throw a line over a tree, done. but i've been thinking about whether a linked dipole would actually serve us better if we need to work multiple bands without fiddling with the tuner constantly. anyone done field comms with a linked dipole and found it worth the extra setup time? also debating whether to bring the generator anyway just as backup. probably smart but adds to the load-out significantly. curious what others are running for exercises like this.
  16. yeah you basically have the right idea. the FCC processes vanity applications in what they call a batch window — applications submitted during a 30 day window after a callsign becomes available are all treated as simultaneous, so its not like first come first served exactly. license class does matter for priority within that pool, extra class applicants get first crack, then general, then tech. so if you're general and an extra applies for the same call during the same window, the extra wins. the 18 month hold thing for callsigns of deceased licensees is still the rule as far as i know, that hasnt changed. its meant to give family members a chance to apply if they want to keep it in the family, which honestly makes sense. and yes there is a $35 fee now, has been for a couple years. you pay through the FCC's payment system when you submit. there are also third party sites like AE7Q that have really good tools for checking whats available and tracking application status, way more usable than the FCC ULS interface which feels like it was designed in 2003 and never touched again
  17. ive been doing LEO sat work for about 3 years and honestly the doppler thing just becomes muscle memory after a while but yeah getting gpredict talking to the radio is the move, dont try to do it manually for linear transponders its brutal. FO-29 is a good one to practice on when its in sunlight, pretty forgiving transponder. one thing nobody told me starting out — watch your audio drive level on the downlink too. the 9700 has that waterfall and its tempting to just crank the RF gain but you want to keep things clean. also the passes go fast so i usually preload the next two or three in gpredict the night before and just have them queued up.
  18. I did mine about six months ago and was in pretty much the same boat as you. I used hamstudy almost exclusively and studied for maybe three weeks, probably not even every single day. The practice exams on there really do mirror the actual test closely enough that when I sat down for the real thing it felt familiar. One thing I'd say is don't get too hung up on understanding every single concept deeply before you test, you can learn a ton more once you're actually on the air and messing with stuff. Get the license first then figure out what aspects you want to dig into. Also worth knowing that some of the questions are kind of just memorization things like band privileges and regulations, not really electronics knowledge at all.
  19. the technician exam really isnt that bad, dont stress too much about it. the question pool is public so youre literally studying from the exact same questions that will be on the test. HamStudy.org is probably the most popular free resource and a lot of people pass just using that. the Gordon West book is good too if you want something more structured and want to actually understand the material instead of just memorizing answers for finding a test session, go to arrl.org and they have a exam session finder where you type in your zip code. a lot of clubs do sessions pretty regularly and some even do online proctored exams now through groups like ARRL VEC or W5YI. once you find a session just show up with your ID and like 15 bucks, they handle everything else. the test is 35 questions and you need 26 right to pass. most people who study for even a few weeks get through it fine
  20. the x300 over the x50 is gonna give you maybe 2-3 dB real world and honestly on 2m ssb that barely moves the needle. collinears are great for omnidirectional work but they're compressing the pattern vertically, which helps when everything is roughly the same elevation but kind of hurts you if you're working into terrain that's higher or lower than you. i went through the same thing a few years back and eventually just put up a 9 element yagi pointed roughly northeast because that's where most of the interesting stuff comes from for me. yeah you miss contacts that are off axis but a 9el has enough beamwidth that you're covered maybe 60-70 degrees without moving it. if you know where your targets generally are, a fixed yagi at like 12-15 dBd is going to absolutely murder a collinear for weak signal. the gain difference is just too big to argue with. rotators arent that bad if you get a decent one btw. az-el is overkill for terrestrial 2m, even a simple tv rotator honestly works fine for a light yagi. i used a channel master for two years before i upgraded.
