David Rodriguez's post in do you actually have to use NATO phonetics or is it just a thing people do was marked as the answernot required by law no, the FCC doesnt mandate NATO phonetics specifically, but theres a reason everyone uses them. certain letters just sound identical over a noisy band or when signals are marginal. B and D and E and G and P and T and V all kind of blur together especially with QRM or when someones signal is fluttery. the phonetics are specifically designed so each word sounds different from every other one even through static and fading.
for your callsign especially its worth drilling them until theyre automatic. i used to write them on a card taped near my radio. after a few weeks it was just muscle memory. N is November yeah, also people sometimes slip in non-standard ones like they'll say New York for N or Texas for T and thats totally fine in casual QSOs, the point is clarity not strict adherence to the NATO list. but in a contest or a DX pileup stick to the standard ones because the DX station is probably working stations from 40 countries and they know what November means instantly

David Rodriguez's post in js8call vs ft8 for actual conversations — am i missing something was marked as the answeryeah FT8 gets tedious fast if you actually want to talk to somebody. i went through the same thing. personally i went back to PSK31 for actual ragchewing on digital, its old school but people on there tend to actually be interested in a QSO not just a signal report. 14.070 still has guys on it most evenings, slower crowd but thats not a bad thing.
never got super deep into JS8Call but i messed with it during a field day type thing and it seemed solid for what it is.

David Rodriguez's post in N1MM vs Log4OM for everyday logging + contests, anyone switching between both? was marked as the answerso ive been using N1MM pretty much exclusively for the past few years and its been fine for contests, does everything i need there, but for day to day logging its kind of a pain to use honestly. someone at the club mentioned Log4OM and i downloaded it a while back but never really dug into it.
the thing im trying to figure out is whether people run two separate programs, like N1MM for contests and Log4OM for everything else, and just import/export between them, or if they just stick with one. i tried running WSJT-X into Log4OM once and it was working but then it stopped seeing the spots and i never figured out why, probably something with the UDP port settings but i never had time to dig in.
also does anyone know if Log4OM handles dupes checking well during a contest or is that still something you really want N1MM for. i feel like N1MM is just so optimized for contest operating that nothing else really touches it for that use case but the everyday interface is just kind of clunky for casual ragchewing and DX chasing outside of contests

David Rodriguez's post in APRS beacon not showing up on aprs.fi — driving me nuts was marked as the answerso ive been trying to get my APRS setup working for about two weeks now and im at my wits end. running a TM-D710G with the internal TNC, antenna is a diamond NR770H on the roof which works fine for regular 2m. i can hear packets coming in on 144.390, the radio is decoding them and i can see them scrolling on the display. but when i beacon, nothing shows up on aprs.fi — not even after 20 minutes of waiting.
i set the beacon interval to 1 minute just to test so its not like im waiting for a 30 min interval to fire. path is set to WIDE1-1,WIDE2-1 which i thought was pretty standard. SSID is -9 since im in the car. tx audio level i havent touched since i got the radio, which maybe is the problem? i honestly dont know where to start looking. the only thing i can think of is maybe the path isnt being picked up by a digi nearby but i can hear plenty of packets so there must be coverage around here

David Rodriguez's post in going from 5wpm to 20wpm — how long did it actually take you was marked as the answerthe wall you're hitting around 8-9 wpm is completely normal and almost everyone goes through it. what's happening is your brain is still trying to process individual dits and dahs rather than hearing the whole character as a sound. the fix is exactly what that person told you — bump your character speed way up, like 20wpm character speed but slow the word spacing down (farnsworth method). lcwo can do this. it forces your brain to stop counting and start recognizing.
as for timeframes, honestly it varies so much i hate giving numbers. i know guys who got to 20wpm in 6 months of serious daily practice and others who took 2-3 years of casual work. the daily consistency matters way more than how long each session is. 20 minutes every single day beats 2 hours on weekends. and get on the air even before you feel ready — there are slow speed nets specifically for this, the LICW has some good ones, and just hearing real QSOs even if you only catch half of it does something to your motivation that practice software cant really replicate.

David Rodriguez's post in confused about where i can actually transmit on 40m as a general was marked as the answerok so first thing -- the arrl band plan is voluntary, it's not law. the actual legal limits are the fcc part 97 rules for your license class. as a general you can use phone on 40m from 7.175 to 7.300 MHz, anything below that is cw/digital territory and you'd be out of your privileges if you tried voice there. so 7.280 is totally fine for you license wise.
the band edge thing is real though. when you transmit USB your signal actually extends upward in frequency from your dial reading, so if youre on 7.300 and your voice peaks hit 7.303 or something you're technically outside the band. most people stay 3 or 4 kHz below the upper edge just to be safe. same idea on the low end of your allowed range.
the arrl band plan just tries to keep things organized so cw guys aren't getting steamrolled by ssb stations and vice versa. nobody can make you follow it but if you ignore it people will let you know, usually not very nicely lol

David Rodriguez's post in first POTA activation went better than expected, few questions though was marked as the answerso i finally did my first activation last weekend at a state park about 45 minutes from me and honestly it went way smoother than i expected. took my FT-891 and a random wire up in a tree, got there early, set up in maybe 20 minutes and made 15 contacts in the first hour which i guess is enough to count as an activated park right? i was using 40m mostly and switched to 20m for a bit but 40 was just killing it in the afternoon.
anyway a couple things i wasnt sure about. when i upload to the POTA site do i need to do anything special with the log file or does ADIF just work straight from my logging program? i was using log4om and it seemed to export fine but i wasnt 100% sure if there were specific fields needed. also someone spotted me on the pota.app and i suddenly got like a surge of hunters calling in, is that normal? felt like a mini pileup which was fun but a bit chaotic lol
also is there a way to spot yourself if nobody else does it first? i saw some people talking about self-spotting but wasnt sure if thats considered bad practice or whatever

Currently comparing 35Ah LiFePO4 vs 75Ah AGM deep cycle for powering IC-7300 at full power during extended operations.
Initial calculations show the LiFePO4 providing approximately 280Wh useable vs 450Wh from AGM (60% DOD). However, the weight difference is dramatic - 9.5lbs vs 52lbs. For backpack portable operations, this seems like a no-brainer despite the capacity disadvantage.
Has anyone done real-world runtime testing with 100W SSB operation? Looking at continuous 50% duty cycle scenarios, not the typical 20% POTA operation. Solar charging capability during daylight hours would be available via 100W panel.
Also considering the Bioenno BLF-1220A vs Dakota Lithium DL+ 12V35Ah-C - both appear well-regarded in the amateur community.

The sketch reads ICOM CI-V data, parses the frequency, and converts it to Yaesu BCD band data for my Quadra amplifier. The project requires either an ICOM CT-17 CI-V level converter or a homebrew CI-V level converter. Having trouble with the level conversion - getting intermittent frequency decoding especially on 20m. Using the 7404 hex inverter level converter instead of the transistor assembly, which should provide cleaner signal inversion. Anyone else run into timing issues with CI-V parsing on ATTiny? The Arduino UNO version works flawlessly but the ATTiny port seems more sensitive to bus collisions.

David Rodriguez's post in getting better audio on SSB — what actually makes a difference was marked as the answeryeah the mic gain and ALC thing trips up a lot of people. the rule of thumb i always go back to is: set mic gain so the ALC is just starting to move on voice peaks, not sitting pegged during normal speech. if your ALC is working hard all the time you're already compressing the signal before the processor even touches it and it ends up sounding squashed and distorted especially on the high frequencies.
the other thing with the stock SM-30 type mics on Icom rigs — they tend to be voiced pretty warm which is great for some things but on SSB you actually want a bit more presence in the 2-3kHz range because thats where speech intelligibility lives. some guys run a tiny bit of treble boost in the TX equalizer settings, like just 2-3dB around 2.5kHz, and it makes a noticeable difference without sounding harsh. the 7300 has a decent parametric EQ in the menu if you dig around in the set menu under connectors i think. worth playing with.
honestly the best thing you can do is get a friend on a nearby frequency and just key up and have them describe what they hear while you tweak. recordings help too if you can do a near field monitor or just throw a SDR on the signal.

David Rodriguez's post in finally getting into CW after putting it off for years — some questions was marked as the answerso i've been licensed for almost 4 years now and i kept telling myself i'd learn morse code eventually and just never did. finally sat down this winter and started going through the Koch method on lcwo.net and im actually making progress, got up to maybe 15 wpm copying on a good day though sending is way behind that still.
my main question is about paddles vs a straight key. i started on a straight key because everyone said to learn the rhythm that way first but now im looking at getting a paddle and a keyer and i honestly dont know where to start. theres so many options and the price range is insane, like you can spend $40 or $400 and i cant tell if the expensive ones are actually worth it or if im just paying for nice machining.
also — any tips for that gap between being able to copy at 15 wpm on a computer but completely falling apart when someone is actually calling you on the air? like my brain just freezes. feels like i know the code until i actually have to use it in real time with pressure
