built my first real dipole from scratch — some questions about the feedpoint
so ive been running a compromised end-fed for about two years now and finally decided to just build a proper center-fed dipole for 40m. cut it to the standard formula, 468/f, ended up with two legs around 33 feet each. strung it up inverted-V style with the apex at maybe 28 feet off the ground using my pushup mast. coax down the center to the shack. here's where im confused though. i built a simple ugly balun, just wound about 8 turns of the coax into a coil near the feedpoint, maybe 6 inch diameter coils. resonance came out around 7.150 which is pretty close to where i wanted it but the SWR curve is way wider than i expected, like it's under 2:1 from 7.0 all the way up to 7.3 which honestly seems too good? my old end-fed with the 9:1 unun was way more finicky. is that normal for a dipole or did i do something wrong that's making it look artificially flat. the antenna analyzer shows feedpoint impedance sitting around 58-62 ohms which seems right for an inverted V but i just want to make sure im not fooling myself here. also the legs arent perfectly straight, one of them has a slight droop and kind of goes around a tree branch. probably affects things but not sure how much.

asked to check in on a net last night and completely froze up — felt so dumb
so ive been licensed about 4 months now and i finally worked up the nerve to listen in on our local 2m net on tuesday nights. the net control actually called my callsign specifically because apparently someone told him i was a new ham in the area, which was nice i guess but also terrifying lol anyway when he called me i totally blanked on what to say. i knew i was supposed to give my callsign and say if i had traffic or not but i just kind of stumbled through it and said something like "uh this is [my call] no traffic" and then forgot to say my location and just unkeyed. the net control guy was super nice about it and just moved on but i felt like an idiot for the rest of the evening. is there like a standard format most nets use when you check in? i looked it up online and found a bunch of different things and now im more confused than before. does it change depending on the type of net?

Dual-band Yagi vs Collinear for base station - performance comparison needed
I ran both setups at different times - the collinear is hands-down better for general repeater work. Collinear antennas are excellent for omnidirectional coverage and provide consistent gain in all directions, which means you won't miss mobile stations driving around town. The Yagi requires constant rotation and you'll miss a lot of traffic.

HT antenna upgrade recommendations - worth the investment?
Been using my Baofeng BF-F8HP Pro with the stock rubber duck antenna for about 6 months now, mostly hitting local repeaters. Getting decent performance but wondering if upgrading the antenna would make a noticeable difference. Looking at the Nagoya NA-771 or similar aftermarket antennas. All handhelds have the same "Achilles' heel" - low transmit power and poor antennas, and if you buy a new handheld radio today, you'll get the same few watts output and rubber antenna as handhelds had four-plus decades ago. For those who've upgraded - is the range improvement worth it? Any specific antenna recommendations for 2m/70cm?

finally chasing DXCC seriously — some questions about how the credits actually work
yeah you can absolutely mix LoTW and paper QSLs for DXCC, thats totally fine. most people do exactly that. the ARRL just wants to see confirmed QSOs, they dont care how they were confirmed as long as the method is accepted. LoTW credits get pulled in automatically when you apply through their system, and then you can also submit paper cards either by mail or at a hamfest where an ARRL card checker is present. the card checker route is way less stressful than mailing originals if you ask me. and yes, chasing multiple awards at once is absolutely how people do it. once you start logging with awards in mind you'll naturally be tracking WAS, WAZ, DXCC all at the same time. get yourself something like DXKeeper or even just use the ARRL's LoTW interface and it'll show you where you stand on each. the zones thing is real though, zone 2 for example can go months without much activity unless there's a specific expedition or contest weekend.

Worth upgrading from General to Extra just for the additional frequency privileges?
Don't forget that Extra Class license allows you to administer all three amateur radio license examinations. If you're interested in VE work, that's another good reason beyond just the frequency privileges. Plus the technical knowledge you'll gain studying is worthwhile even if you don't use every frequency segment.

first HT — totally lost on what to get
so i just passed my tech exam last week (finally) and now im trying to figure out what handheld to get. everyone keeps telling me different things and im kind of overwhelmed. like my friend at the club says get a baofeng to start and not waste money, but then someone else was like no no no get a yaesu ft-65 or even stretch for the vx-6r because the cheaper stuff will frustrate you. i genuinely dont know enough to know what the difference matters yet. im mostly going to be hitting local repeaters, maybe some simplex, and eventually want to do some APRS stuff but thats way down the road. budget is probably $50-100 range but could maybe do a bit more if it really matters. is the baofeng uv-5r actually as bad as some people make it out to be or is that just snobs talking. genuinely asking, not trying to start a fight lol

Solar flux dropped to 111 - still worth checking 15m/10m?
Good morning everyone! I noticed the solar flux has dropped from the mid-150s down to 111 over the past couple weeks. The sunspot number is sitting at 72. Is it still worth firing up the rig on 15m and 10m during the day, or should I focus my time on 20m for now? I'm running 100W into a simple dipole at 30 feet, so I don't have a lot of power to punch through marginal conditions. Any insights from those who've been working the higher bands lately?

New Ham Confused About CTCSS - Can Hear But Can't Access Repeater
Lower frequency CTCSS tones like 67.0 Hz can take longer to decode than higher ones, sometimes causing the first syllable or two to be clipped. Since you're using 131.8 Hz, that shouldn't be the issue. Try manually entering the tone frequency rather than selecting from a preset list - some radios have slightly different tone frequencies in their menus than what the repeater actually requires.

first time trying LEO birds with a linear transponder — few questions
yeah what he said on the doppler. i had the same confusion when i started. one thing that helped me was just watching the waterfall on the downlink for a few passes before i ever tried transmitting — you can actually see how the passband shifts and get a feel for the rate of change. the correction rate is way faster at AOS and LOS than it is near max elevation, which i kind of knew in theory but seeing it is different. hand rotating yagis is totally doable btw, lots of people do it. gets tiring on longer passes but for a 10-12 minute pass its fine. i did that for probably a year before i built an az-el mount. just watch your elevation on Gpredict and try to keep up, high elevation passes are way harder to track manually but theyre also shorter horizon to horizon so its kind of a wash

finally studying for general, few questions about what to expect
I just did this like 4 months ago, went from tech to general. Honestly the electrical stuff tripped me up too at first but once i watched a couple youtube videos explaining how to actually do the math for the impedance and resonance questions it clicked. dont just memorize the answers for those ones because the numbers change slightly sometimes and if you understand whats actually happening its easier. the propagation questions i just brute forced memorized and that worked fine for me 40m is great by the way, got my first real DX contact within a week of upgrading, was pretty stoked

Most clubs have scripts to help new net control operators get started. Ask your NCS coordinator for their standard script - it really helps with the nerves! Recording yourself during your first few nets is one of the best ways to improve your skills.

confused about what i can and cant do on certain bands as a tech
so i passed my technician exam about three weeks ago and ive been trying to figure out exactly what bands i have access to and what modes i can use but honestly the way part 97 is written is kind of hard to follow for someone just starting out. like i get that i have full privileges on VHF and up but then i see people talking about HF and 10 meters and i thought techs couldnt do HF at all? someone at my club mentioned something about a small portion of 10m and maybe some 15m or 40m but only for certain modes and i got confused. also i was wondering if there are rules about power limits that are different depending on the band or mode because i dont want to accidentally be out of compliance and get in trouble. i know the FCC takes this stuff seriously but im not sure how seriously they actually monitor it for someone just getting started on a handheld or a cheap base station. anyway if anyone can point me to where i can find a plain english version of all this that would be great
