I'm a new General trying to nail down proper phonetic usage. I know you're encouraged but not required to use NATO phonetics, and many operators use informal alternatives like America, Germany, Sugar, etc. My question: Are there specific situations where NATO phonetics are absolutely necessary vs. where alternatives are acceptable?
For example, should I always use NATO when working DX? What about during contests or emergency communications? I want to develop good habits from the start.
