  1. I've noticed quite a few operators on 40m lately with overdriven audio that sounds absolutely terrible. The mistake many make is trying to see 100W output on their average-reading power meter by maxing mic gain, which results in horrible sounding audio and dirty signals that interfere with adjacent frequencies. With proper mic gain configuration, SSB should only show about 30W on an average power meter while speaking. Your ALC should barely flicker on voice peaks. Use a dummy load and second receiver to dial in proper settings - you'll be amazed at how much better you sound with conservative gain levels.
  2. Unfortunately, no exceptions exist to FCC rules for any operations - all FCC rules apply 365 days a year, though Field Day participants must also observe additional ARRL rules. The ID requirements are non-negotiable even during emergencies. However, you can streamline by having net control handle most of the talking and having check-ins simply give call sign, traffic count, and location efficiently.
  3. I've used HAMRS on probably 50+ activations and it's been solid. Works on my iPad too which is nice for bigger screen logging, though POLO is phone-only. The purchase is worth it IMO for the features.
  4. so ive been putting this off for like two years but i finally got around to building a proper 40m dipole from scratch instead of just running my old whip with a tuner. cut two legs of 33.3 feet each off some 14awg stranded wire i had in the garage, used a SO-239 chassis connector i had in the junk box for the feedpoint, and soldered the whole thing up with a little chunk of thick pvc pipe as the center insulator. drilled two holes through it and sealed with some self-amalgamating tape. hung it inverted-V style from a 30 foot mast i cobbled together from some telescoping fiberglass poles, legs going out at roughly 45 degrees. fed with about 50 feet of RG-8X down to the shack. heres the thing — my SWR is reading around 1.8:1 at 7.150 and it kind of dips to about 1.5 near 7.200. i was expecting to get closer to 1.2 or so. tried trimming a few inches off each side but it barely moved. i checked my connections look good and the solder joints are solid. any ideas whats throwing it off? i'm wondering if the angle of the legs is affecting the feedpoint impedance more than i thought, or maybe its the coax acting up. the coax has been outside for a while and i never put a drip loop on it which i know i should have done.
  5. the rf immunity thing bites everyone eventually. one trick i havent seen mentioned much is wrapping the whole arduino in a grounded metal enclosure — even just an old altoids tin works surprisingly well for a lot of shack builds. bond it to your station ground and a lot of the gremlins go away. also maybe consider opto-isolating the relay triggers if you havent, those cheap relay boards sometimes have them built in but not always wired correctly from the factory.
  6. Tube amplifiers still have their place, especially for budget-conscious ops. A well-maintained 3CX800 or 4CX800 can provide reliable 1KW+ output at a fraction of SSPA cost. However, consider the cooling requirements and potential RFI issues. For EME work where you might be transmitting for hours during moonrise/moonset windows, thermal management becomes critical.
  7. I went through the same exact frustration last year! $35 is a steal for someone to program a Baofeng radio professionally if you just want to get on the air quickly. But if you want to learn, try the BTECH PC03 cable - it uses genuine FTDI chips and works great with CHIRP.
  8. Too low mic gain gives weak modulation and low power. Too high engages ALC constantly, clipping and compressing audio into distorted pinched sound. Your 35W average with 85-90W peaks sounds perfect for speech characteristics.
  9. Looking at replacing my 20-year-old Mosley TA-33M (3-element tribander) with something more modern. The old Hy-Gain Explorer 14 had reasonable performance with its 4-element trapped design, but I'm considering the newer interlaced element designs like the Innovantenna XR6 or building something similar to the ZL2AL multiband project. For those who've made the jump from classic trapped yagis to interlaced designs, what's the real-world difference in DX performance? I understand that more interlaced bands can reduce per-band performance, but the no-trap reliability is appealing. My current beam still works fine but I'm tired of trap maintenance every few years.
  10. Dealing with persistent RF issues in my HF setup and looking for troubleshooting advice. I have all equipment bonded to a copper bus bar with short flat braid, proper single-point ground to exterior rod, and ferrite chokes on coax at the entry panel. Still getting RF on microphone and some digital hash from the PC speakers when transmitting on 40m. When setting up your ham radio station, it's essential to manage common-mode currents (CMCs) effectively—not by relying on a so-called "RF ground," which is a myth—but by properly placing chokes and minimizing current loops through your shack. Misplaced grounding connections and improper choke locations are common causes of RF interference and noisy receivers. Current setup: TS-590SG → 100W → 80m inverted vee at 35 feet. Should I be looking at additional choking or is this likely a ground loop issue?
  11. so i finally did my first WWFF activation today, been meaning to try it for ages after reading about it on here. went out to a local nature reserve that's registered as a reference (KFF-xxxx i think, had to look it up on the wwff.cc site) and honestly wasnt sure what to expect in terms of whether anyone would actually call in or not. i set up a simple end fed wire in an inverted vee off a fiberglass pole, ran about 10 watts on 40m and made contact with 16 stations before the battery started getting low. i know you need 44 to actually activate the reference but i wasnt really expecting to hit that number on my first go anyway, more just wanted to see how the whole thing worked and get a feel for it. what surprised me was how friendly everyone was on the frequency, a couple of hunters (i think thats what they call the people chasing the references?) even stuck around and gave me tips in between contacts. one guy told me to post my spot on the WWFF spotting network before i even start operating which i had no idea about, would have helped a lot. anyone else do a lot of WWFF? curious whether 40m is usually the go-to band or if i should be trying other bands when conditions are better. also wondering if parks on the air activations count for WWFF too or if those are totally separate things

There is no set time limit, but the exam generally takes anywhere from 15 to 45 minutes. Don't rush - you have plenty of time!
  13. Planning my first solo POTA activation and trying to keep power consumption down. I've heard about Ham2K POLO being free and good for POTA/SOTA logging, but also seen mentions of HAMRS. Anyone using these apps and can comment on battery usage? Started with paper logging but that gets tedious when you're making lots of contacts. Looking for something that won't kill my phone battery during a long activation.
  14. The contest privileges alone justify upgrading. Most major contests use the HF bands heavily, and you can even become a VE to administer Tech exams once you're General class.
  15. so ive been licensed about 8 months now and keep hearing people talk about how amazing 10 meters is supposed to be near solar maximum but honestly every time i tune around up there its just... quiet. like nothing. occasionally ill hear some beacon or a carrier somewhere but thats it. i know we're supposed to be near or at solar max right now and the SFI numbers have been pretty high lately, like ive seen it up around 180-200 some days, but i cant seem to catch any of these openings everyone talks about. is there a specific time of day i should be watching? or is it more of a regional thing where the paths just dont favor my location (im in the midwest, ohio specifically). my antenna situation isnt ideal — just a dipole up about 25 feet — but that shouldnt be a killing it completely should it. genuinely curious if im just on at the wrong times or if theres something else going on.
  16. Also make sure you're using the correct offset. On 2-meter band, the common offset is 600 kHz. If the repeater output is 146.940, your radio should transmit on 146.340 (minus offset) with the 100 Hz tone.
  17. Don't get discouraged - lesson 8 is where many people hit their first real wall because you're dealing with longer characters like K and R. Make sure you're not trying to count dits and dahs, just let the sound patterns sink in. Your brain needs time to build those reflexes.
  18. Just got my first HT (Baofeng UV-5R) and trying to get it programmed for local repeaters. Downloaded CHIRP and got a programming cable from Amazon, but can't get the cable to connect to my Windows laptop. The driver keeps failing - shows "device not recognized" error every time I plug it in. Is this the fake Prolific chip problem I've been reading about? I'm getting frustrated trying to figure out which driver version to use. Any suggestions for a programming cable that actually works reliably? Or should I just pay someone to program it for me? Really want to get on the air but this technical stuff is overwhelming for a new Tech.

I'm trying to wrap my head around all the spotting networks - QRZ has their cluster, DXWatch looks popular, and I see mentions of DX Summit. What mobile apps do you recommend for monitoring spots on the go? I'd love something that can filter by band and maybe send alerts for new DXCC entities. Also still learning the etiquette - when should I spot vs just work the station? Thanks for the help, 73!

  21. Try enabling debug logging in JS8Call (set QT_LOGGING_RULES=*.js8=true in your environment). This will show you exactly what the software is doing when it receives group queries. I found my issue was that the auto-reply logic wasn't triggering because I had MULTI decoder disabled and was missing some of the slower speed transmissions.
  22. Welcome to the hobby! Many newcomers fail to program the CTCSS tone properly. You only need T-CTCS (transmit) set to 100.0 Hz. Leave R-CTCS off unless you want tone squelch on receive.
  23. I went the self-study route from 5 to 25 WPM over about 8 months. Key was consistent daily practice (even just 15-20 minutes) and gradually increasing speed. Don't be afraid to listen to code faster than you can copy - it trains your ear for the rhythm and spacing.
  24. Germany on 10w SSB thats really cool, ive been thinking about QRP but always assumed i needed at least 100w to do anything useful on HF. maybe im wrong about that. does the built in battery last very long or do you pretty much always bring an external pack?
  25. im kind of in the same boat as you actually, been at it for maybe 3 months now and its slow going but its coming along. i use LCWO like the other guy said and also been watching some youtube videos just to mix it up. the one thing i'll say is dont try to do it for an hour straight, like 15-20 minutes a day seems way better than cramming. my brain just stops absorbing it after a certain point and i start guessing. also i heard about something called the G4FON trainer which people seem to like but havent tried it yet myself
