  1. yeah i had the same confusion when i started. honestly the best thing i did was just listen to the net for like two or three sessions before ever checking in — got a real feel for how that specific NCS likes to run things because every net is a little different even if the basic rules are the same. some are super formal and some are pretty laid back.
  2. Check your "Extra Time to forward through RMS" setting - if it's zero, messages won't queue for HF forwarding. Set it to at least 10 minutes. Also verify your HF gateway list populated correctly and that you have working propagation to at least one target RMS on your configured bands.
  3. so ive been licensed for about 8 months now and just starting to get into chasing DX more seriously. a buddy at the club told me to check out DXwatch for cluster spots and i've been using it alongside QRZ to look up the stations im hearing but honestly im not totally sure im using the workflow the most efficient way like right now i'll see a spot on DXwatch, look up the callsign on QRZ, then try to tune to the freq. by the time i do all that the pile up is already insane or the station has QSY'd. is there a better way to set this up or is there some other tool that kind of combines all this? i saw someone mention DX Summit too but i dont know if that's any different really. also does anyone use any phone apps for this instead of juggling browser tabs
  4. yeah rotctld isnt too scary, i had it talking to my az-el setup within an afternoon once i found the right model string. honestly the hardest part for me was getting the ADC readings stable enough — rotator pots are noisy and if you dont do some averaging or filtering in firmware you get this jittery azimuth display that drives you nuts. i ended up just doing a rolling average over like 16 samples and that cleaned it right up.
  5. so i just passed my technician exam last week and im trying to figure out what handheld to buy as my first radio. everyone keeps telling me different things and im honestly more confused now than before i started asking lol. my buddy at the club said get a baofeng UV-5R and be done with it, but then someone on reddit said those are junk and i should save up for a yaesu or kenwood. the thing is i really dont have more than like 55-60 bucks right now and i dont want to wait another month to get on the air. mainly i want to hit the local repeaters and maybe do some simplex with a couple friends who are also new. i dont need anything fancy. does the programming thing with chirp actually work or is that a whole other headache i have to deal with. any advice from people who have actually used these things would be great
  6. Looking to get my Tech license and wondering what study methods worked best for others here. I'm planning to study 20-30 hours total and can commit about 30 minutes per day. Should I focus on memorizing the question pool or understanding the theory? I've heard mixed opinions about HamStudy.org vs the ARRL manual vs KB6NU's free study guide. Any recommendations?
  7. the 8 bit vs 14 bit thing is kind of a simplification but the practical result is what matters and yeah the RSP stuff handles strong signals way better. ive got a HackRF for transmit-capable stuff and an RSP2 for serious receive work and honestly the RSP wins for just sitting and listening, the HackRF noise floor is mediocre for RX even though its useful for other things one thing nobody mentions enough is the software side making a huge difference regardless of hardware — like running a good LNA and a preselector filter even on the cheap dongle can close the gap more than people expect. but if youre already past that and still frustrated then yeah spend the money on the RSP
  8. I passed mine last July using Gordon West Extra Class study book and the Ham Radio Prep app. The combination works well - Gordon's explanations for the theory and HRP for drilling the questions. Actually try to learn what you read and avoid going through and just memorizing the question pool.
  9. okay so ive been licensed for about 3 months now, general class, and i get on HF occasionally but honestly half the time i have no clue what people are saying. like i know CQ obviously and 73 but then someone will say QSY or QRM or something and im just sitting there nodding along pretending i understand. theres also all the abbreviations like OM and YL and DE and stuff that nobody ever really explained to me when i was studying for my test. the study materials kind of glossed over it. is there like a master list somewhere or do people just kind of pick this up over time? also are some of these more common on certain bands or modes, like is CW people using different ones than phone operators? i feel like im missing a whole layer of whats actually being communicated
  10. ok so ive been interested in ham radio for a while now, my neighbor has a big antenna setup and it got me curious. i looked it up and apparently you have to take a test? i dont really know what the difference is between the different license levels or which one i should go for first. also how hard is the test, i wasnt great at science in school but im willing to study. is there like a specific book i should get or do people just use websites these days. any help appreciated, sorry if this is a dumb question
  11. so ive been on HF for about two years now mostly doing SSB on 40 and 20 and i keep getting comments that my audio is either too bassy or sounds a bit muffled. running an IC-7300 into a Heil PR-40 which should honestly be more than enough to sound decent but something isnt clicking. ive messed with the bass/treble and the TX bandwidth settings in the radio a bit but i feel like im just poking around without really knowing what im doing. talked to a guy on 14.225 last week who had absolutely pristine audio, like broadcast quality almost, and he said he just runs a stock mic into a Kenwood. so now im second guessing everything. is it the mic placement, the EQ settings, the compression, what? i know the 7300 has built in parametric EQ and i havent really touched that. and how much does mic technique actually matter on SSB vs just dialing in the radio settings? feel like theres a lot of opinions out there and not much actual consistent advice
  12. Welcome to the big leagues! My advice: tune, call once, listen, and log. If you work someone, try them again on another band. Don't get discouraged by the rate - even 100 watts can go far when propagation smiles. What's your antenna situation looking like?
  13. If you're struggling with mic fright, the only way past it is getting some success under your belt. Start easy with a friend or trusted ham. Join your local club meeting first - meeting people face to face makes it easier on the air.
  14. yeah the offset thing got me too when i first started, i had mine set the wrong direction for like two weeks and couldnt figure out why i kept hearing myself on simplex basically lol. chirp can be a little weird about how it displays all that stuff. once you get it sorted though repeaters are really fun, theres a linked system near me that connects like four or five machines across the whole county and you can talk to people pretty far out
  15. Don't give up! Those who finally get over that "hump" and progress beyond 10 wpm do so because they have begun to copy code by reflex instead of by thought. The problem is you're probably still using that "lookup table" in your brain - comparing each character until you find a match. You need to train your brain to recognize whole character sounds as reflexes.
  16. the rushing thing when someone comes back to you is completely normal and honestly never fully goes away for some folks haha. I remember my first sked with a patient elmer on 40m, I completely fell apart sending my own callsign three times before I got it right. on the straight key vs paddle question — I'd actually say stick with the straight key a bit longer if you can. there's a school of thought that learning on a straight key first builds better character recognition because you're forming every element yourself, and a lot of the old timers swear by it. the inconsistency you're describing is almost always a tension issue. your wrist and forearm should be relaxed, not gripping tight. if your hand is tense the timing goes all over the place. try resting your whole forearm on the table, not just your wrist, and see if that helps. that said, once you do move to a paddle and keyer, the Iambic mode can feel strange at first. mode A vs mode B is a whole rabbit hole. but dont worry about that yet, get your straight key sorted and keep running those Koch sessions. 12 characters in 8 months of casual practice is solid progress.
  17. Use tight bandpass filter such as 3 stage Chebyshev to match IF pass-band. External low noise power supply to dongle - not USB power. USB RF dampening. Metal can enclosures with ground plane. Proper RF design is critical for good results - don't skimp on filtering and isolation.
  18. DXpeditions travel to remote and rare countries to activate them, often making thousands of contacts with experienced operators and multiple stations. Your station should be fine for working them - it's more about being there when they're active and having good timing with propagation.
  19. our club is doing a carpool if you want in, we usually meet up at the Dennys off the highway around 6am which sounds brutal but it means you actually get first pick of the good tables before everything gets picked over. shoot me a message if your interested
  20. no hard rule on it for casual ragchews on a repeater, at least not in the regs. the phonetics are really there to make sure your callsign gets copied correctly when conditions are rough or someone doesnt catch it the first time. a lot of guys will say the call normally once and then if someone asks for a repeat they'll go phonetic. on HF especially during pile-ups or when theres QRM you pretty much have to use them or nobody knows what you said. but on a local repeater with good audio and no noise just saying your call normally is totally fine, nobody's gonna give you grief over it. some older ops just do full phonetics out of habit every time and thats fine too, just personal style at that point.
  21. one thing that tripped me up when i started was that some abbreviations people use arent actually Q codes at all, they just look similar. like 73 means best regards and 88 is hugs and kisses (yeah really), neither of those are Q codes theyre just old telegraphers shorthand that stuck around. and DE means 'from' as in W1ABC DE K4XYZ. people mix all this stuff together and its kind of a whole language honestly i wrote mine on a notecard taped to my desk for like the first 6 months. no shame in it
  22. yeah the generator noise thing is real, parks departments have gotten way more strict about it over the last few years. we had a similar situation and ended up running a 120ah lifepo4 as primary with a small 1000w inverter generator as backup only — generator never even had to run during the last two exercises. if you keep the HF power down to 50w and are disciplined about the laptop and not running a bunch of chargers simultaneously you can stretch a 200ah pack a long way. one thing that helped us was putting the laptop on a small 12v automotive style inverter instead of the big one, cuts the conversion losses down. also worth looking at whether you can run the 7300 direct off the battery at 13.8v rather than going through an inverter at all, obviously you can, im just saying dont add inverter losses where you dont need to. the antenna thing i dont have a great answer for pavilions honestly, every site is different. we usually end up doing a lot of compromises depending on what trees or structures are nearby.
  23. so ive been trying to work some DX on 17m and 15m this past week and honestly the conditions have just been all over the place. some days the solar flux is up around 160 and i can hear europe clear as a bell around 1400-1500 UTC, then the next day its back down to like 130 and everything goes quiet. checked the DXmaps and theres activity showing but i cant hear squat. had a really weird thing happen tuesday where i worked a JA station on 15m with my 100w and a dipole, which felt like a miracle honestly, and then literally 20 minutes later the band just died. like hard cutoff. wasnt a gray line thing either, at least i dont think so. K index was low so i wouldnt expect a geomagnetic thing. just curious if anyone else is seeing this kind of behavior or if its something on my end. antenna has been checked, no issues there. also noticed 10m has been teasing me. it opens up for maybe an hour sometimes in the afternoon to south america and then poof. is this just what solar cycle 25 looks like right now or am i missing something about how to predict these short openings better
  24. so ive been at this for about 8 months now and the progress has been kind of frustrating honestly. started at 5wpm with just the Koch method stuff on the G4FON trainer and got up to around 13wpm pretty smoothly, but now im just stuck. like i can copy text fine if im relaxed and not thinking about it too hard but the moment i start a real QSO my brain just locks up and i fall apart after like 20-30 characters. i know people say the jump from 5 to 15 is easier than 15 to 20 but man i didnt expect it to feel this bad. my sending is probably better than my receiving at this point which is a weird place to be. anyone been through this and actually made it to 20wpm? what finally clicked for you? i practice every day on the trainer but im wondering if im doing something wrong or if this is just the grind everyone talks about
  25. the audio codec thing is real and its worth spending some time in the settings rather than just leaving it at default. i went through probably three or four different configurations before i landed on something that felt acceptable for SSB. the higher bitrate options eat more bandwidth obviously but if youre on fiber you probably wont even notice. where people run into trouble is trying to run it over congested wifi or like you said rural DSL — that introduces jitter that no codec is really going to fix cleanly. for weak signal stuff i havent tried it personally but i know a few guys who do FT8 remote and they say the digital modes are actually more forgiving than SSB because the software is doing the decoding locally anyway, so the audio just needs to be clean enough for WSJT-X or whatever to decode, doesnt need to sound great to your ears. SSB DX chasing with lots of QSB is where it gets annoying because youre fighting both the prop and the latency when trying to snag a split pile-up. on the internet linking question, yeah thats kind of a separate thing. some guys run echolink or IRLP nodes through a remote station but RemoteHams isnt really designed with that in mind as far as i know. you could probably hack something together but id keep those two use cases separate unless you have a specific reason to combine them.
