E9: Antennas and Transmission Lines

Subelement E9 is the largest and most comprehensive section of the Extra class exam, covering all aspects of antennas and the feed systems that connect them to transceivers.

You will study fundamental antenna parameters such as radiation resistance, efficiency, gain, and effective radiated power; antenna radiation patterns and computer modeling techniques; practical wire antenna designs including phased arrays, folded dipoles, and long-wire configurations; Yagi and parabolic antennas; impedance matching networks; transmission line characteristics; the Smith chart; and specialized receiving antennas for direction finding and low-band operation.

Key point: E9 spans eight groups: antenna fundamentals (E9A), radiation patterns (E9B), wire antennas (E9C), directional antennas and loading (E9D), impedance matching (E9E), transmission line characteristics (E9F), the Smith chart (E9G), and receiving and direction-finding antennas (E9H).

Study These Topics

E9A Antenna Fundamentals: ERP, EIRP, Efficiency, Gain, Ground Study E9A
E9B Antenna Patterns, Beamwidth, and Modeling Study E9B
E9C Wire Antennas, Phased Arrays, Ground Effects Study E9C
E9D Yagis, Parabolic Reflectors, Loading, Antenna Q Study E9D
E9E Impedance Matching, Stubs, Power Dividers Study E9E
E9F Transmission Line Characteristics and Stubs Study E9F
E9G The Smith Chart Study E9G
E9H Receiving Antennas, RDF, Beverage, Loop Antennas Study E9H
