so ive been licensed for about 8 months now (general) and i feel like im still just sitting on my radio not really doing much with it. i hear people talking about checking in to nets and i tried to find some schedules online but honestly the info seems really scattered or outdated. like i found one page that listed a 2m net on 146.940 but when i tuned in at the listed time there was nothing there, just a quiet repeater.

also saw something about a special event station being active for some kind of anniversary thing and missed the whole window before i even figured out what was going on. is there a good way to track these things or is it mostly just word of mouth and knowing the right people? feels like theres a whole social layer to this hobby i havent cracked yet

yeah the net schedule thing is genuinely kind of a mess to navigate at first. the ARRL has a net directory but honestly the most reliable thing ive found is just asking at your local club because somebody there will know whats actually active versus whats been dead for two years but still listed somewhere. a lot of the old net schedule pages just never get updated.

for special event stations, the best place i know is the ARRL special event station page, they list upcoming ones and it gets updated pretty regularly. also W1AW operates on a published schedule if you havent tried working them yet, thats kind of a rite of passage thing. once you check in to a few nets you start hearing about others through the net control operators, they usually announce stuff at the end of the session. just takes a bit to get plugged in but you'll get there.

same boat as you not too long ago honestly. what finally clicked for me was just picking one net and showing up consistently for a few weeks. i found a regional 40m net through a guy at a hamfest who literally just wrote the frequency and time on a piece of paper for me. low tech solution but it worked lol. now i know about like six or seven nets just from people i met through that one.
