first time checking into a net — what actually happens?

so ive been licensed for about 3 months now (general) and i keep seeing people mention checking into nets but i honestly have no idea what the process looks like in real time. like i know the basic idea, you call in, the net control takes your call sign and that's... it? is there more to it than that? do you have to say anything specific or is it pretty informal

theres a local 2m net on tuesday nights and i've been lurking on the frequency for a couple weeks just listening and it seems pretty relaxed but i dont want to sound like an idiot when i finally key up. also i noticed they sometimes have a what they called a "traffic" portion at the end — whats that about, do i need to do anything for that or can i just check in for the regular part

also totally separate but i saw something about a special event station for a state park anniversary next weekend, is that something you just try to work like any other station or is there like a specific window you're supposed to call them in

welcome to nets, you're gonna love it. the tuesday night thing sounds like a typical local club net which are usually super low pressure. basically net control will open it up and say something like "net is now open for check-ins" and you just wait for a pause and say your callsign phonetically. thats really it for most of them. they'll acknowledge you, maybe ask if you have any announcements or traffic, you say "negative" or whatever you actually have, and then you just listen or chat if it turns into a ragchew portion.

the traffic part — that's NTS stuff, national traffic system. if you dont have any formal written messages to pass you just skip that or say you have no traffic. nothing you need to worry about right away honestly.

for the special event station, yeah just call them like any dx station. they're usually running a pileup so maybe listen a bit first to get the rhythm of how they're working people. a lot of them will send you a nice QSL card or certificate after which is kinda fun when you're just starting out.

i was terrified my first checkin too lol. just do it, worst case net control asks you to repeat yourself and thats fine, happens to everyone. i checked into my first net and completely blanked on phonetics halfway through my callsign and just said the letters regular and nobody cared at all
