so i finally did my first WWFF activation last weekend, went out to a state forest near me that has a KFF reference and set up a little portable station with my KX2 and a 40m wire dipole slung between two trees. managed to get 27 QSOs in about 2 hours which i think is enough to qualify the reference? i looked it up and i think you need 44 for a full activation but honestly i just wanted to get out there and try it.

few things im not sure about — do i need to spot myself on the WWFF cluster or can someone else do it, also how do i submit the log after, is it just through the wwff.world website or is there a different process for KFF specifically. i was using ADIF from HAMRS and im not totally sure it has the right fields for the nature reference.

also the wildlife there was incredible, there were these massive herons just hanging around while i was operating and a deer walked through camp like 20 feet from me. honestly that part alone made it worth it. would definitely do another one, just want to make sure im doing the logbook stuff right before i go back

congrats on the first one, sounds like a great time. so yeah 44 QSOs is the threshold for a full activation, anything under that still counts in the log but doesnt officially activate the reference. 27 is a solid first run though, you'll get there next time no problem especially once you get comfortable spotting yourself early.

for spotting, you can absolutely do it yourself on the WWFF cluster at wwff.world/cluster, a lot of people use their phone to self-spot while operating. someone else can spot you too if they hear you, but dont rely on it especially at less popular references. as for the log submission, in North America you're dealing with KFF which is run through parks and peaks and the submission process is a bit different than the global WWFF one — you upload through the KFF portal and it syncs over eventually. HAMRS should export fine, just make sure your log has the KFF reference in the right field, i think it's the POTA/WWFF field in the ADIF. some people manually add it after the fact if their logger didnt capture it automatically.

the deer walking through camp thing is very on brand for WWFF, half the reason people do these activations honestly

I did my first KFF activation about a year ago and had the same questions about the log. What worked for me was just emailing the log to the address listed on the KFF site, they were really responsive and helped me figure out the ADIF format issue I had. Might be worth reaching out directly if the upload gives you trouble, the people running it are genuinely helpful.

Also 27 contacts portable with a wire dipole is nothing to scoff at, what band were you primarily working? I've found 40m is great for filling the log but if the activation site has some decent elevation 20m can really open things up for hunters in Europe which is always fun.
