mobile whip vs collinear for 2m/70cm - worth the extra height?

so ive been running a basic dual band whip on my truck for about two years now, the little rubber duck style mag mount thing, and it works fine for local stuff but i keep wondering if im leaving signal on the table. theres a guy in my club who swears by his NMO-mounted collinear, says he gets into repeaters ive never even heard of just by driving around.

im thinking about upgrading but honestly not sure if the gain difference is actually that noticeable in practice or if hes just hitting better terrain. the whip im running now is a diamond SRH-77CA if that matters. was looking at maybe a Comet SB-7 or something in that range, maybe 5-6 dBi, NMO base. my truck has a drilled NMO mount already from the previous owner so thats not the issue.

anyone actually done a side by side comparison or noticed a real difference going from a unity gain whip to something with actual collinear gain? or is this one of those things where the terrain and repeater coverage matter more than a few dB on the antenna?

yeah the difference is real but maybe not as dramatic as your friend makes it sound. going from a unity gain whip to something like a 6dBi collinear is legitimately useful especially on flat terrain or when youre trying to hit a repeater thats 40-50 miles out. the lower takeoff angle helps a lot for ground level mobile work.

that said i ran a Comet CA-2x4SR for a while and honestly the biggest improvement i noticed wasnt the gain, it was just having a properly matched antenna on a good NMO mount instead of a janky mag mount with a lossy coax run underneath the door. if your existing install is already solid then yeah the collinear will add something meaningful. if the coax run is sketchy or the mag mount is sitting on a painted surface youre probably losing more than the antenna gains you anyway.

the SB-7 is decent but its a bit long for some parking situations. just something to think about if you go into a lot of low clearance garages.

terrain wins every time in my experience. ive compared antennas all i want but if theres a ridge between me and the repeater its not happening regardless. that said on a clear shot path the collinear does pull in those marginal signals noticeably better, its not just placebo. your friend probably just drives routes with better RF geography honestly
