So ive been chasing summits for about 6 months now and finally decided to stop being a spectator and actually get up on one myself. Picked out W6/NC-461 for my first attempt, its only like a 2 mile hike so nothing crazy, but im still nervous about the whole thing.

My main question is around logging - do i need to pre-spot myself on SOTAwatch before i go up or can i just get up there and start calling? I have cell service on most of the ridge based on previous hikes so i should be able to self-spot once im set up. Also wondering if i need to register the activation ahead of time on the website or if you just log it after the fact.

Gear wise im bringing my FT-818 and a homebrew EFHW for 40 and 20m, plus a lightweight tripod to get it up. Figured id aim for SSB since thats what i know but i might try a few CW contacts if the band is cooperative. Planning to be up there around 10am local time Saturday if any chasers happen to see this.

Any tips from people whove done a bunch of these would be really appreciated, especially around the 4 contact minimum thing and whether partial activations count for anything.

Welcome to the addiction, seriously once you do your first one you wont want to stop. Ok so to answer your questions - you dont need to pre-register anything, just show up, make your contacts, then log them on the SOTA database afterward. The summit reference for W6/NC-461 should already be in the system.

Self-spotting via SOTAwatch3 once you're up there is the way to go, chasers watch that thing like hawks and youll get a pile up pretty fast especially on a weekend morning. If for some reason you lose cell service you can always try calling CQ on 14.285 or 7.285 and someone will usually spot you. Also worth posting an alert on SOTAwatch before you leave home if you can, even a rough time estimate helps chasers plan their day.

The 4 contact minimum is hard - no partial credit unfortunately. But honestly on 40m SSB on a Saturday morning you should have 4 contacts within the first 5 minutes of calling, no problem. Have fun and post how it goes.

oh and dont forget to check if there are any other activators on the same summit that day through the alerts page, not that it matters much for your activation but its kinda fun to know. also the EFHW should work great, i used a similar setup on a few W6 summits and 40m is usually the money band in the morning before it closes up. good luck
