Just got my first HT (Baofeng UV-5R) and trying to get it programmed for local repeaters. Downloaded CHIRP and got a programming cable from Amazon, but can't get the cable to connect to my Windows laptop. The driver keeps failing - shows "device not recognized" error every time I plug it in.

Is this the fake Prolific chip problem I've been reading about? I'm getting frustrated trying to figure out which driver version to use. Any suggestions for a programming cable that actually works reliably? Or should I just pay someone to program it for me?

Really want to get on the air but this technical stuff is overwhelming for a new Tech.

Welcome to the hobby! You're absolutely right about the fake Prolific chip issue - it's due to "fake" Prolific chips in cheap cables, and Prolific put a "poison pill" in their later drivers that detects the fake chip, not letting you talk to it. Get an older driver version that works with the fake chips, or better yet, cables that use a genuine FTDI brand chip set seem to install more easily and consistently.

I went through the same exact frustration last year! $35 is a steal for someone to program a Baofeng radio professionally if you just want to get on the air quickly. But if you want to learn, try the BTECH PC03 cable - it uses genuine FTDI chips and works great with CHIRP.

YES – it may be said that we are turning folks into "appliance operators" and not "true hams." But I sure can remember my first HT and that excitement of first getting on the air. Don't let programming frustrations kill that enthusiasm. Get it programmed professionally first, then learn CHIRP later when you have time to experiment.
