first real contest experience - CQ WW this weekend anyone else jumping in?

 Loading...

so i finally decided to actually participate in CQ WW SSB this year instead of just listening to the pile-ups and wondering what was going on. been licensed about 14 months now and ive been putting it off because honestly the whole contest thing felt kind of overwhelming — like everyone else knows some secret rulebook and id just be in the way.

spent the last couple evenings reading through the exchange format and i think i get it, you send your signal report and your zone number, they send theirs, log it and move on. seems straightforward enough but im sure ill mess something up the first few QSOs. running a 100w into a dipole up about 30 feet so not exactly a superstation but my neighbor did pretty well in last years event with similar setup so im hopeful.

also totally unrelated but ive been thinking about doing SOTA activations before the weather gets bad — anyone stack those with contest weekends or is that just chaos? and is ARRL Field Day really as social and fun as people say or is that more of a club thing where you feel out of place if you show up solo

Jump in, seriously. Your first CQ WW you're gonna make mistakes and that's completely fine, most people on the other end have been doing this for decades and they're patient when someone fumbles the exchange. Just speak clearly, confirm the zone number before you log and you'll be alright. 100w and a dipole can work suprisingly well if the bands cooperate, I worked something like 40 countries in a single afternoon with a similar setup back when I first started contesting.

On the SOTA question — yeah people definitely do sota activations during contest weekends, some activators love it because there's more activity on the bands and its easier to get your required contacts. Just be aware that contested frequencies get pretty crowded so finding a clear spot on a summit can be more of a challenge. Worth it though if the weather holds, late fall activations have this whole vibe to them that's hard to describe.

Field Day is genuinely one of the most welcoming operating events there is. Showed up solo my first time not knowing a single person and within an hour someone had handed me a headset and was walking me through how to run a pile-up. Go find your local club's setup if you can.

dont stress too much about CQ WW, ive been doing it for years and i still occasionally blank on my zone number when im tired haha. zone 5 by the way if your ever in a qso with me and im being slow about it.

one thing i wish someone had told me early on is just use N1MM or whatever logging software and let it handle the dupe checking, trying to do it manually during a busy contest is a nightmare. the software also helps with the exchange format so you dont have to keep the rules page open the whole time.
