so i finally did my first activation last weekend up on a little summit near me, W4T/SU-062 if anyone knows it, not a super high point but hey it counts. i'd been chasing for about 6 months before i worked up the nerve to actually go up and activate and honestly i was way overthinking it the whole time.

took my ft-818 and a linked dipole i built from a kit, threw it up in a tree with a painter pole and worked about 14 stations in maybe 45 minutes which i guess is more than enough to qualify. had a couple guys come back to me twice which was cool, didnt realize chasers do that. the whole thing was just... fun? like way more fun than i expected sitting in a pile of rocks eating a sandwich trying to keep my log straight.

couple things im not sure about though — when i upload to sotadata do i need to enter the summit reference exactly as it appears on the database or is there some flexibility there. also i noticed some activators post their planned activations ahead of time on SOTAwatch, is that basically required or just a nice thing to do. and one more thing, whats the deal with the S2S contacts, i had one guy say he was on a summit too but i wasnt sure how to log that differently. sorry for all the questions just trying to do it right

congrats on the first one, that feeling after you close out a successful activation is pretty hard to beat. to answer your questions — the summit reference needs to be exact when you upload, like letter case and the hyphen all have to match what's in the database or it'll kick back an error. sotadata is pretty picky about that stuff but once you do a couple uploads it becomes second nature.

posting on SOTAwatch ahead of time is definitely not required but honestly it makes a huge difference in how fast you get your 4 contacts. chasers around the world are watching the alerts and spots and they'll come find you, otherwise you're calling CQ into the void hoping someone happens to be listening. i usually post an alert the night before with an estimated time and frequency and then self-spot when im actually on the air. some activators dont bother and still get their contacts but it can take longer especially if you're on a less popular summit.

S2S is just summit to summit and yeah you log it the same way basically except you want to note the other person's summit reference in your log. when you upload to sotadata there's a field for it. both of you get points for S2S which is a nice bonus, chasers love confirming those too.

oh man W4T/SU-062 is a nice little starter summit, i think i chased someone off there maybe a year ago. the FT-818 is such a solid choice for this stuff, ive seen people use all kinds of rigs but that one just works and the battery situation is easy to manage.

one thing i'll add about SOTAwatch alerts — even if you're bad at predicting exactly when you'll summit, just posting something vague like a 2 hour window helps a lot. chasers are patient and theyll check back. i've had activators post alerts and then show up 3 hours late and still get spotted and chased so dont stress about being precise. the community is pretty forgiving about timing as long as you actually show up eventually haha
