finally worked a T32 after years of trying — some thoughts on pileup technique

so i finally cracked a T32 pileup last weekend after literally years of near misses and it got me thinking about what actually works vs what people think works. ill preface this by saying i run a pretty modest station, K3 and a 4el yagi at 45ft, so nothing crazy.

what finally worked for me was listening to where the DX was actually pulling calls from instead of just firing away. sounds obvious but honestly i used to just transmit and hope. this time i sat and listened for probably 15 minutes first and realized he was working maybe 3-4khz up and kind of cycling through different parts of the spread. once i figured out the pattern i just dropped my call right where i thought he'd move next and boom, first call he came back to me.

also turned off the noise blanker which i know sounds weird but i was getting some intermod on my rx from all the stations in the pileup and it was smearing signals together. cleaned it up a lot.

curious what other people do, especially working split on 40m where the rx window you have is so compressed. anyone running separate rx antennas for this kind of thing?

yeah the listening thing is huge and most guys skip it completely. ive worked some rare ones over the years and the single biggest mistake i see is people transmitting before they even know where the dx station is listening. they just hear the pileup noise and start calling blind.

on 40m split i actually use a beverege for rx when the band is long, it narrows things up enough that i can pick out where the DXpedition is actually digging. makes a noticeable difference. without it everything kind of blurs together especially late in the evening when there's 400 guys all running 1500 watts into a small slice of spectrum.

the pattern thing you described is real. good DXpedition operators especially the big ones like WRTC-caliber guys, they're very deliberate about where they move their listening frequency. if you can figure out the rhythm youre way ahead of the random callers.

good point about the NB, i had a similar issue during the recent FT5 pileup where my noise blanker was making things worse not better. switched it off and suddenly i could actually copy the DX through all the qrm.

one thing i'd add — timing your call to end just slightly before the DX stops transmitting seems to help, at least on ssb. on cw its a little different. i think it keeps your call fresh in the rx at just the right moment but i cant really prove that, just feels like it from experience. also keeping your exchange super tight, no extra info just callsign period, makes a difference especially if propagation is marginal and youve only got a small window.
