so ive been a general for about two years now and i keep going back and forth on whether to bother with the extra. like i know you get the extra spectrum privileges and all that but honestly i dont use half of what i have access to now. the main thing holding me back is the theory sections — the stuff about phase angles and filter design and whatever the smith chart questions are about. i passed my general without really understanding all of it and im worried extra is gonna be a whole other level of that.

does anyone actually use the advanced theory stuff in day to day operating or is it mostly just to say you passed the hardest test. genuinely asking because i dont want to spend three months studying for something that doesnt change how i operate at all. though i guess the cw sub-bands thing is appealing if i ever get serious about morse.

honest answer? the theory clicked for me way more than i expected. like i went in thinking it was gonna be pure memorization like the general pool but some of the extra stuff — the filter stuff especially — actually made me understand why my antenna tuner does what it does. the smith chart questions look scarier than they are, theres really only a handful of ways they ask about it and once you see the pattern its not bad.

as for the privileges, i thought the same thing as you before i passed. but having access to the lower cw portions of 40 and 80 is actually really nice for dx work, less qrm down there most of the time. and 60 meters is cleaner on the extra segments too. but yeah if youre happy with what youre doing now and not chasing dx or contesting much, its not gonna change your life overnight. i still think its worth it just to have done it though, and studying for it made me a better operator even if i cant explain exactly how.

i just passed mine last month actually. used hamstudy and just drilled the question pool for like six weeks. didnt fully understand everything but enough to pass comfortably. the phase angle stuff and the transistor biasing questions were the ones i had to really work at. the test itself felt harder than the general but not insane or anything.

the extra hf privileges are nice but tbh i upgraded mostly so i could join a certain club that requires extra class lol. whatever the reason works right
